I'd say the opposite because the best thing about it are the amazing presets. As soon as you start f**king around with any of them to fit something into a mix, the magic evaporates. And you need to have all four voices in unison before it even starts to be able to compete with even freeware softsynths. Big waste of time and money.

Bass station 2 is so good, you can do pretty much everything with it.

Having spent over a month with my PolyBrute, it has totally blown away my expectations and, believe me, my expectations were already astronomically high. I get lost in this synth for hours at a time because it just keeps on delivering and has an endless sweet spot.

Agree with others on the Nord Lead 2. I tried to get there in software but finally cracked and bought one for a good price. Just an incredible sounding synth if you are into VAs. I think the fact that it is a VA is what ended up making it sound so good. The work they did to emulate analog didn't quite get to exact analog sound and as a result it has it's own unique vibe that is amazing to this day, at least for me.

Yes, it was just discontinued in Feb. along with the King Korg and another synth I can't remember

Still on their website as a current product. If it had been discontinued in Feb, I think they'd have thought to take it down from their website by now. King Korg is still there, too.

Waldorf M again. I have worked with mainly analog sounds and drums over the past weeks and conquered new ground. Today I just leaned back, updated the M and explored the new Filtertypes (FM...). They give M that touch of uncontrollable madness I just needed to get my tired head a little cooler. This deep deep solid roughness didn´t really blow away my expectations. It completely changed them. Once again.

I find I get over new hardware really, really quickly, way more so than with softsynths. e.g. If you asked me what I thought about my Uno Pro Desktop I would tell you, sincerely, that I love it, yet the reality is that yesterday I switched it on for the first time in more than six months. I still haven't connected the output so I can actually hear it, I'm using it strictly as a MIDI controller. Hardware is so much more annoying than software and it never sounds anywhere near as good. I don't have the patience for it any more.

I'm the same with plugins usually. I dowloaded Vital and surprised myself how I liked it. But I know within 2 weeks I won't be using it because it has such a small window of useful sounds outside of the usual wavetable metallic nastiness and unison seems to makes any kind of sharp envelope impossible (yet you have to use unison to make it powerful enough to sit in a mix). Love its formant filters but you can only do so much with that one sound. I bought both Wavestate and Opsix native and used them each once, whereas I still use the hw regularly - yet I convinced myself I'd spend hours playing around with them on the laptop away from the studio. I didn't. Using sw synths for making music is just so tedious for me. And thin-sounding usually.

Behringer Monopoly is getting very regular use and surpassed my expectations. I use it in almost everything and in different ways and I just can't seem to tire of it. It's got probably the weakest filter out of all my analogues but somehow it manages to sound good all the time. And I simply love its arp - I have other synths with arps but often don't use them as that kind of style doesn't often grab me (was never really an arp afficionado), but Monopoly cycling voices in arp mode makes me just play for hours every time and puts a smile on my face - which is what I hope for with any synth.

This is the key. It's similar for me, just the other way around. I've been using computers and music software for 30 years and I'm just fed up with it. I try new plugin and after 10 minutes I'm like "meh", even if presets sound good. I make better sounding stuff with hardware simply because I enjoy taking time with it.

Hardware of course isn't without annoyances, mostly having to do with cables, bulk and the whole studio integration part, which is where software is brilliant. I was hoping Minifreak will bring some next level blend of both worlds, but as far I've seen from videos it's sadly still not as seamless as I hoped.

'Osmose' exceeded my expectations even after a 3 year wait! Now I have it my Hydrasynth may have to go, but I wouldn't part with my Summit or Pro 3 as I just love the sound and hands on control.

I've been using Prophet 5 "emulations" for 20 years. Started with Pro-52, then 53, then Re-pro. They were my go-to synths for a dozen albums at least.

Last year I treated myself to a real life rev 4 Prophet 5.

Completely blew me away. I knew generally what to expect of course, but had no chance to try before buying, either a rev 4 or any other P5 rev. Previously owned a P6, never gelled with it and sold it on.

The.. texture of the sound of this thing is just stellar. At the risk of descending into a dark well of meaningless superlatives, it is rich and raw and heavyweight. Especially when you start messing with the Poly Mod section.

I've since gone back to A/B some of my Re-Pro patches. They are def in the same ball park, but the sheer sizzle and heft of the real deal sparks much joy.

(I still use Re-Pro a lot, it's a great synth).

M through Eventide Blackhole sounds like textured waves floating through space.

I have everything i wanted since the 90s and upto 2022 in the box now

If that's true, you must be pretty bad at what you do. Give us some examples.

Not a great example, none of those emulations do much to exceed the original. How many unison voices can you have in those VSTi? None of those instruments are worth shit to me, they don't have a fraction of the punch of my best softsynths.
