Wouldn't clap be a better bet? I've no bias either way atm as I only have VST2 synths and fx.

No.

Here is some info on CLAP: https://u-he.com/community/clap/. One DAW and a couple of plugin makers. Until i takes off (if it does), VST3 will be the dominating standard.
