Hi all,

Kling Klong is a collection of 170+ unorthodox percussion loops and hits offering countless variations via the XY pads. There are four categories:
  • Mono Loops
  • Poly Loops
  • Fantasy Hits
  • Reality Hits
Most "Mono Loops" are arpeggiated sequences, letting you create variations by simply holding down different notes across the keyboard.

The "Poly Loops" make good use of Hive's polyphonic shape sequencer instead of the arpeggiator/sequencer: By stacking notes the user can turn slow loops into complex rhythms or dramatic repeating "flams" – an unusual technique well worth exploring!

I'm using this in Reaper, with it's included 'joystick support', so I have two x-y
spring-loaded joysticks on an old Logitech game controller, mounted on the leading edge of my main synth, that easily control the sounds. Many of which have four destinations mapped on each stick. In the Hive presets view, the eight destinations are listed in a row, and you can see the dials move as you move the sticks.

I'm also using a dual arpeggiator with latch mode on, so a string of played notes,
will keep the beats playing as I switch sounds, and explore the possibilities.
When I get to a keeper, I use Reaper's simple 'Save live output to disk' option
and name the wav including the preset title and bpm, and effects if used.

Without some sort of regimen, the myriad possibilities unveiled could overwhelm one's memory. I suspect Hive's wavetable capabilities are in play, as some joystick positions open up nice unexpected sounds. So wavetable transplants among the underlying sounds might be a fine adventure.

A lot of the presets have 'the main' sound modifiers most easily accessible, but there are many combos easily checked with the two gamepad sticks. Viewing the sticks' axis as two square bounded boxes, there are

inside corners
outside corners
circling the perimeters of each, and reversing direction
up on one, down on the other,
left on one, right on the other,
left and down,
right and up
etc etc
and all the subtleties in between, especially where cutoff and resonance are among
the eight possibilities. A player could go wild, but a player who understands programming Hive as a synth, could defy limits. From thrash metal to whatever labels fit the opposite extremes, this soundset gets things rolling, and rewards pausing to study the potentials.

More traditional midi controllers will no doubt reveal different nuances than the springiness of my setup makes apparent. So I'll be looking for joysticks that lack the springs, while midi-learning with the sliders on my QS8, as time allows.

I should add that the game-controller might also open up possibilities with the rest of the Hive sounds, as my favorite pad sound, that triggered the Hive purchase way back, contains a delightful harmonic climbing pitch when slowly moving the stick down.

What if your daw lacks joystick support? I would recommend redefining Reaper as a
'synth-control-driver module', and for between around $70 to $120, avail yourself of some long-term sonic controls of excellent products.

edit: I suppose I should mention that eight or ten of the gamepad buttons trigger notes of a chromatic scale, another somewhat playable possibility, depending on the plugin at hand and it's sounds melodic functions.

I failed to find the Kling Klong in the KVR marketplace in the first ten pages of the soundsets area, and gave up. Could be operator error. There were 3rd party U-he sounds there. Seems an omission?

I added a Korg nanoKONTROL2 along with the Logitech gamepad, the Korg having eight knobs and eight sliders without springs, and works in conjuction with the gamepads two springy joysticks, so I can use a Korg control to choose a parameter's 'starting point' from which the joystick begins it's journey, rather than it starting from an arbitrary setting.

The klip is one preset, three joystick positions, each sounding quite different from the other.

ehh, yeh... I'll let you know how this is when I can finally stop playing around with Mono Loop Funky Drum1 :dog: ... But seriously, this is a banger of a bank. Once again, ENDLESS variation. It's a bank of bazillion patches but def shines when modulated real-time. Thanks for another whopper Howie, learnin' LOTS

Has anyone else run into this issue? I've played with Kling Klong so long I think I've gone blind. Is this permanent? Thanks in advance for your help. * Klong *

Had to bump this thread cause the sound set is so good. :)

At some point, weak people such as myself, can become assimilated into the sonic lifestyle
presented by a small number of instrument, effect, and sound creators. I might wake up in
a boring or difficult life situation, but when I fire up a U-he synth, and explore the sounds (often with an HS prefix) the day/night becomes more exciting and easier to navigate. The sounds light a fuse of unknown length, but there will always be that release of energy in the flow of work and play. Historically, there have been some great musicians and composers with limited physical vision.
I am challenged to envision the capabilities of these musical tools, and then put them to good use.

This soundset feels perfect for an upcoming series I'll be working on. Thanks Howard and Urs!
