Last night I flipped through a few songs on his Deram collection from 1966-68 [using Rhapsody]
Pretty cool to hear his "sound" was there even on those early recordings ... same Bowie-esque delivery and melody construction

I think Madonna is pretty great in her genre ("Music" is a brilliant song, which i'd like to make a rock-cover from), but she hasn't got the songwriting-skill that Bowie has.
It's not just his performance (which he does pretty brilliant too) but anyone who writes songs him/herself knows how great his songs are. It's out of this world how eclectic and rich his work is and that's nowhere near an overstatement. Buy the DVD and be amazed about the setlist and performance.
BTW, Prince is a close second. Great stuff, although he should edit himself some more. Especially live he is unbelievable.
Sure there are other brilliant bands and songwriters (i'm a big Slayer-fan for example) but they master ONE genre. Bowie INVENTED a genre and has played with many others.
