Pitch Bend in MSoundfactory with Ableton

Has anyone figured out a way to make pitch bending work in MSoundfactory without having to set it up in the MIDI config every single time you load a new patch? It's pretty frustrating and interrupts workflow

Post

I don't use Ableton, but using a different host, I set up real time controls that work with a number of MSF Instruments (selected from the device list) when I switch Instrument Presets using the preset selector or the randomizer.

In my host I have PB from my keyboard routed to the Pitch (Globals) parameter.

Post

MSF's pitch bend range seems to default to 24semitones for most devices, but the default MPE pitch band range is 48st in most cases including Ableton.

Therefore, it would be useful if you could lock the pitch band range so you can set it to 48 and it doesn't get changed when loading a device or preset.

The 24 semitones are actually taken from Linnstrument (and Seaboard?), which are quite common MPEs now. That imho makes way more sense than using a value from a DAW (not mentioning they didn't have it when we started supporting MPE).

According to the MPE spec, the default is 48. I have a LinnStrument, and I set it also to 48 to not be forced with the majority of MPE synths to adapt it… I would follow the standard… Could also be a global option… Locking parameters like in the U-He plugins would be also a valid enhancement to tackle this…

Seaboards default pitch bend range is +/- 48 :)

Ok, I'll check if it will be possible to change the defaults then. The problem is, it is usually hardwired in the devices, so...

Can someone address my original question? Not sure how this got onto pitch bend range with MPE devices
I can make a video showing my problem if it's not clear.

Sorry if I misunderstood and talked about a solution I found. It seemed to me when I read the topic and your post that one reason why PB might not work for you was because the range was set to zero by default or to a default that you didn't want. I think that's why others started talking about PB range defaults and how to set and lock them on a global basis. My bad.

Maybe you could state what you have to do for each patch to make PB work for you since it is something other than setting the PB range.

Ah, I apologize.

Ok, so upon loading an instrument in MSoundFactory, my pitch bend wheel does nothing. In order for it to work, I have to click on MIDI on the toolbar of MSF, and assign the controller "Special Pitch Bend" to "Param 237 - Globals - Pitch".
Loading a new patch or instrument deletes this assignment so the pitch bend wheel is back to functionless.

I could set the assignment up once every time I load MSF and then select "Do not load from presets", which keeps the pitch wheel assignment, but then that messes with other assignments, such as what the mod wheel does for various instruments. And to be honest even having to set it up once per instance is pretty tedious.

Basically it would be great if the pitch wheel being mapped to the global pitch was just a default setting. But it seems like I'm the only one with this problem? I'm using Ableton Live 11 and an Arturia Keylab mkII MIDI controller, so nothing outdated or out there.

Hope this is making sense now!

Hey đź‘‹
I checked this for you and I got the same behaviour. It seems the issue is with Ableton. I will report this to them. Basically, you need to disable the MPE mode in Ableton. If you right-click on the device you should see the option there. Then pitch wheel should work.

Ahhh thanks so much! That makes things so much easier!!

Just wanted to throw my hat in for this feature. Locking pitchbend would be very helpful when changing presets.

The pitch bend range will default to 48 semitones from the next version, hopefully that will do the trick. And you CAN lock it in the edit screen - there's the "Lock" feature in the Edit / Utilities.

That's good news. I always thought the lock feature in the Utilities applied only to the modulators, and ignored it. There's always more to learn in your plugins which is amazing.

It took me a while to find it, so I made a video in case anyone else has trouble figuring it out. If you do this, the pitch bend range will stay the same, even if you load new presets and devices. If you go to settings and press "Set default settings", MSF will start with the lock already in place. I hope this is helpful until the new version is out.
