Since it feels like a weird time-travel with a 2005-synth in 2022, and for many of us Vanguard was probably the main or first vst synth, I have been building some patches and some raw preview snippets... just for fun and for the memories

btw, all presets in the snippets don`t use any effect plugins, eq, or stuff on it - just xfer LFOtool for sidechain feeling. Got me thinking, using this oldie without its own reverb and e.g. Valhalla Supermassive on it, it should sound pretty nice.

I definitely can feel similar things when using Gladiator, although the GUI is a bit off (tiny knobs even on full screen etc.)
Also Warlock is great, which has a simple interface but powerful and wide sound.
FireBird, Gladidator and Warlock are synths with HCM synthesis (harmonic-content-morphing). Here you can alter an existing additive spectrum with various algorithms.
Vanguard uses an algorithmic/wavetable-style approach.

I developed FireBird as a new synth for reFX after Vanguard. However, Mike did not like the sound of the prototype and was already busy with doing Nexus.
I also had created a prototype for FilterBank which should be also a new product for reFX. Mike did like its sound, but had no time to release it under his label.
To be able to release these products I founded Tone2.com .

During the next year the GUI of Gladiator, Electra, RayBlaster, Saurus and Nemesis will be reworked. It will get a zoom-able interface and WQHD/4K/8K support. Also the blurryness on Mac on certain scales will be gone.

Very good :tu:
And while you are at it, please implement in all your installers the option to select what plugin format and component we want to install. You are one of the few DEVs who still forces us to install everything.
This is how it should look like:

And I don´t remember if it is still the case with your plugins..
The option to choose the location WHERE the presets and all the sample content (if existing) should be installed!

Thanks

@Markus, what do you think about CLAP, will you consider to support it? I mean, using DAW's modulators on voice level is quite attractive :)

Thanks for the feedback. I already have taken care of it and you now can pick from various installation types.
Please do also note that the above kind of installation can cause trouble for unexperienced users.

I am convinced that CLAP is very good thing. I am seriously considering to support it.
The CLAP is very popular among developers, since it is simple, well-designed, cross-platform and has very fair licensing condidtions. It is alraedy raising the market-share rapidly.

Please try to stick on topic (->Vanguard).

rubez wrote: Wed Nov 23, 2022 1:28 pm So for the uninitiated what was special about Vanguard 1?
For me it had a distinctive aggressive digital sound that was all over the sort of EBM / Industrial Dance stuff I was listening to at the time. The main lead sound here is one of the presets -

Ended up using it in one of my tracks too... hadn't heard anything else quite like it back then.

I hadn't realised a re-release was on the cards so it's come as a surprise to me. If there was a demo available I'd be tempted :)
Haha, this sound is the main reason I want Vanguard. I should see if I can get something similar in Icarus.

Have "recommended install" or "custom install" buttons. Usually people that don't know what they're doing will stick with the word "recommended". People that know what they're doing usually tend towards "custom".

Sorry for continuing the off topic :ud: but I wanted to let you know that it's great when installer remembers plugin path from the initial/previous installation - only when it was modified (maybe others share similar experience).

Agree. All the synths want to look the same nowdays?

Post

I could not resist, there is not much about these days that perks my interest and this does. +1 on the old GUI I think it looks ace (old one with the faux back lit light green LCD and brushed aluminium facia) and I would also like the the old "vintage" reverb algo option. Maybe in the next update ?

I think that any future improvements and updates to functionality should leave everything that was originally in the synth exactly as it is. Maybe just add a little more flexibility in. I look forwards to getting into it, the timing for me was really good for this release, that pushed me to buy it.

I do like the idea of including the old reverb as an option, since it had a very distinct flavor to it, but I really do like the new reverb.

FigBug or someone mentioned earlier that the Nexus skins work with Vanguard 2? Has anybody tried this? I don't have Nexus, so I can't try it, but I'd love to see some screenshots if someone's willing to post them.

wondering, with the new reverb the old sounds/project will definitely sound different?

+1 for the old reverb and bring some of that silver and green onto the GUI.
