Waves RBass free alternatives?

Today many users use saturation and/or the layering of different basses.

TBH, i never got the point of bass enhancing plugins. Can't you do all that with layering, or EQ'ing? Or is it rather a one click, or quick applying of something you'd have to do more tediously?

No, this Waves plugins are psycho-acoustic effects adding specific harmonics based on the fundamental tones of the sound, the effect cannot be achieved with layering or EQing.
But maybe.. people sometimes equalize the bass with a similar idea with cutting the very low frequencies and the same time boost higher frequencies.

Anyway, I can't remember that current bass tutorials recommending MaxxBass/RBass. But this doesn't mean that still some users find a usage for this plugins.

Just get RBass, you won't regret it, along with Bass Rider. I've tried the alternatives, RBass walked it.

Glad I got Waves RBass for free a couple of years ago. I wanted to have it ever since I first used it (long time ago). There was a thread saying that the patent for the underlying technology runs out, so maybe some developer will try to recreate the magic?

Also, a few days ago the very cool Swedish developer Klevgrand released their very own bass enhancement plugin. Has anyone tried it yet? https://klevgrand.se/products/knorr

You need full version of Kontakt (not just Kontakt Player) to run this Bass Enchanter plugin (demo in Player is 30 minutes).

Check out Thimeo Stereo Tool.
Among many other plugins, it consists of three modules for bass:
- Bastardarizer
- TrueBass
- Bass Cliper

It's free only as Winamp DSP plugin (not all modules, but at least those for bass), VST paid, but you can use Winamp DSP to VST bridge to run it as 32 bit VST. The only limitation is 16 bit output, but it still sounds decent.

Installation instruction
Place wa_dsp.dll and plugin.ini both in the same VST folder, edit path to Thimeo in ini.
If Thimeo doesn't show up (most likely) place plugin.ini with correct path near your DAWs VST bridge. As the first location you can check you DAW root directory near exe if you don't have a bridge (or if you open 32 bit plugin in DAW, a bridge process might be shown in process manager, so you can find its location and place ini nearby).
When Thimeo shows up, don't close it, otherwise it won't reappear till you restart your project in DAW.

For lower latency in Stereo Tool change it from 4K to 2K, don't pick more than 2 CPU cores and use 1 thread option - still, there might be some problems when you cut a track in the middle so you'd need to compensate where the cut starts for it and shift a little bit. Maybe not noticeable much with that settings, but still.

Sadly old free iZotope DSP doesn't work with that bridge. It shows up for a moment and disappears. Maybe it works in a background. I didn't check.

Looks like I found some early Viper4Windows plugin in a form of DSP for Winamp as well, so it can be used as VST with wa_dsp bridge I mentioned above (tested).

Among others, there's Super Bass option with BASS/SOFT settings,
You need to keep gain in the plugin very low (~0.29) to avoid heavy clipping (bridge is 16 bit).

I think Real Bass Exciter above is less muddy and more versatile, at least on the mix buss, but experiment.

For some people, it's the one of the best all-rounders for general audio enhancing purposes used in players. Crispy treble and decent bass with option of adding "harmonics" and "drum" bass.

Might be more feasible for bass track (still, keep plugin volume low ~0.29).

Different things.

Substrate generates sub bass harmonics, RBass generates upper harmonics.

Wavesfactory Spectre replaced RBass for me, and many other enhancer/saturation plugins too.

Looks and behaves visually like an EQ but it isn't. In De-Emphasis mode it subtracts EQ before it saturates, so you can target and create upper harmonics of the low frequencies only - and blend it back with the original signal (wet/dry). You can select between a bunch of different harmonic signatures (tube 1st order, transistor 3rd order, etc) - it's just extremely powerful and elegant.
