What device the VOS ThrillseekerVBL is emulating?

Lots of great Mu plugins these days. Can't say I have any recollection what VBL sounded like though. But you've got:
Kush AR-1
Pulsar Mu
Klanghelm MJUC
Overloud Comp670
Fuse VCL-846U
Fuse VCL-25A
Arturia Tube STA
Slate FG-Mu
If you pop Thrillseeker in Plugin Doctor and compare against the others to try to closely match settings, I bet one would get close.

Same. I would kill for Tokyo Dawn and VOS to collaborate again and reimagine the old VOS plugins.Halonmusic wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2019 2:36 amWe should kidnap him and force him to make plugins againheavymetalmixer wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2019 2:27 amSadly, we will never see anything like the VOS plugins again, because their dev stop making plugins.s28 wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2019 2:25 amcron wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2019 12:46 am ThrillseekerVBL is such a great plug. I mostly use it for parallel processing. I love absolutely smashing the track through it with extreme settings then setting the dry/wet knob accordingly. It vibes things up a treat. I've just gone 64-bit, so I'll probably experiment with a few other plugs to see if they can nail that particular sound with the same vibe, but I suspect I'll be bridging it for a very long time.
I haven't heard anything that does what VBL does so I recently have gone back to bridging both this and Density MKIII, they are both great. VBL does something unique, especially the way the amp/transformer sounds. Sounds very real to me. I also really enjoy using it in parallel.![]()
in all seriousness though, i havent given up hope that he will return someday

Klanghelm Mjuc as well as the Sonimus Vari-Mu can get you into proximity, but Thrillseeker VBL is really one of a kind. Also love the Thrillseeker LA for bass, voice and other "slow" and "long" signals. I hope Bootsy / Herbert is well. I really don't know the reasons why there hasn't been another collaborative project between Tokyo Dawn - VladG and him. Together they could transfer Bootsy's DSP magic into the next decade.

Looks like we never got to the bottom of this. The description alludes to this being an emulator of a specific 50s limiter, and I would be curious to know what it is. I was able to ascertain that the Nasty CS is probably meant to emulate the Neve 1073, because the interface is so similar. This one's still a mystery to me, though.

I haven't verified this, but the unique sound of the 32 bit version sounds like the phase rotation that some broadcast limiters use. You can get close to the same sound with Nomad Factory Magnetic.

I asked myself something similar a while ago, like kevinsparks says, phase rotation is what gets the unique sound. It's not a straight Vari-Mu. I made a forum post asking the question and the first reply summed it up: allpass filters. viewtopic.php?t=563967&start=15
What I've since read is that radio broadcasts have and still do use allpass filters to create phase rotation, which gives most of the time gives you harder-hitting transients with no extra volume cost, allowing a louder radio signal without compressing. The typical thing (apparently) is 4 Allpass filters at ca. 200 Hz - but honestly I've found it's best to experiment extensively with frequencies, bandwidth, and number of filters.
Options for pleasing phase rotation I've found are:
Not customisable, but nice-sounding default settings:
- Klevgrand REAMP/Freeamp
- TDR SlickEQ GE
- u-he Presswerk
- kiloHearts Disperser
Customisable:
- MFreeformPhase
- MPhaser
- ReaEQ
- Lots of EQ Three stacked in a row (copies kH Disperser, see: )
You're still missing the compression and saturation after that, but your favourite vintage-y plugins should help you out there. Important in the saturation is that it uses a lot of odd harmonics. GSatPlus' Transformer preset sounds excellent and helps me get the ThrillseekerVBL-like sound, but generally any saturation that sounds good and can add odd harmonics will work (e.g. SDRR).
