A conversation about two synths heads towards the Cogito because people get confused about the contextual nature of words. I wonder how often this happens.

I think there are too many tabs in Dune 3, particularly for accessing the main oscillators. The tabs at the bottom do outstrip by number those in which Hive 2 has also... So from a usability aspect Hive has the edge over Dune 3 and there is no way to change that from the users-end script-wise. As I mentioned in my earlier post, you don't actually have to embrace all the new features that a new Hive GUI actually has. You can go back to a simpler GUI and switch back to the latest version of Hive on the fly should you want to. It means you can learn the basics as a new user of Hive. There are free GUIs you can find online including my own for Hive which I've released for free in the past few weeks. For the basic Hive look of old, you can look to this thread here. For the latest development of Hive GUI projects, you can look here, where this skin is based on a truncated text design.Vortifex wrote: Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:38 am I'd choose Dune over Hive purely on UI alone. Hive is way too busy and confusing in comparison.

You have added nothing to this thread, so stop trolling it. This applies to anyone else thinking of doing so.

It's utterly ridiculous to compare a 4 Osc single layer synth with a 24 Osc 8 Layer synth.THE INTRANCER wrote: Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:44 pm So from a usability aspect Hive has the edge over Dune 3 and there is no way to change that from the users-end script-wise.
They're two different instruments. That is painfully obvious. Just stop.

That's OK. No one wins with threads like this. It's just another thinly veiled attempt to pimp his skins.

Here are the definitions.
Objective
1. (of a person or their judgment) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.
Subjective
1. based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.
But God bless this forum because you guys will twist definitions any way you can to suit your own purpose.
This is just another reason why our world is such a mess.
the rest of us learned the definitions you posted above, but whatever school intrancer went to, also seem to have messed up "obscure". i mean, why else would someone call the sem obscure?

The thread is about comparing the differences between the two synths. They share similarities and differences, and for those who have never used them or just getting into music production, any information to help them decide on what they want to know will be helpful to them, from another persons experience. For the record, they are not two different instruments. It's not like we are comparing a sampler and a pure subtractive synthesizer.Teksonik wrote: Thu Dec 22, 2022 10:04 pmIt's utterly ridiculous to compare a 4 Osc single layer synth with a 24 Osc 8 Layer synth.THE INTRANCER wrote: Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:44 pm So from a usability aspect Hive has the edge over Dune 3 and there is no way to change that from the users-end script-wise.

My point was based on a single layer of Dune 3, regardless of the other 7 layers. Dune 3 is more tab heavy than what Hive 2 is. In my opinion Dune 3, should have all oscillators of a single layer in view. It doesn't, simply because of the way in which Dune 3 is designed. Some people might be ok with that, some may not.
.....
As for highlighting and directing people to free stuff I develop... I do this because I believe in helping people enjoy what they do. I don't ask for money.

Yeah, right.tony10000 wrote: Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:07 amHive can sound amazing and it has amazing real-time modulation capabilities. You are obviously not a synth programmer.
DUNE has some of those things and ArcSyn had the Shapers thing years before Hive did. I assume that's where they got the idea from. It's function generators and shapers give it a lot of additional capabilities.
I prefer writing songs to writing scripts, thanks. I am much more musician than nerd. You can also create uhm scripts and easily load wavetables from other synths. As I said previously, Hive complements Dune quite well.
The thing with Hive is that it sounds great on its own, it's when you put it into a mix that it falls over. It's not terrible, it's on par with Pigments and ArcSyn and a few others, but DUNE is on another level. And it is definitely not about features, it is about the actual quality of the sound, which is very difficult to quantify but completely obvious when you are trying to use them in a mix.
That is a 20% difference. But I agree with your basic argument, they are not so different CPU-wise that you would choose one over the other. It's also quite a compliment to Synapse that you would obsess over matching DUNE's optimisation.Urs wrote: Thu Dec 22, 2022 10:04 amIn any case "much lower" or "by a mile" feels exaggerated when the difference is between 0.4% CPU for a sawtooth on one and 0.5% on the other.
