Clipper is absolutely a waveshaper.
A dynamic processor Limiter is not, a clipper that calls itself a limiter is.

Waveshaper generally refers to means of operation.

I like Wavesfactory Spectre for increasing loudness, combined with Newfangled Saturate. Ursa boost is also interesting. There's a free maxforlive device that copies Inflator.
I also use inflator tho, ppl will always come in and scream its a basic waveshaper, decapitator aliases, vital sounds cold etc etc usually these people don't actually complete music, imo and should be ignored.

There’s nothing wrong with inflator being a soft clipper. I use voxengo ovc128 on masters all the time, i also use built in clipper in saturn2/kelvin on tracks often.

Some people just wanna avoid dongle/cloud activation or use what they already have.

I just bought standardclip, and it's good but not great. The metering could be clearer. Actually Melda Waveshaper is pretty good for free.
But I wonder, what waveshaper/soft clipper has the most precise control and clear metering?

If its so special that people already refer to it as the Name of the Plugin soundwise, I would rather go with the Original or just try to recreate the Sound with the ones I already have.

Yes! The inflator is a mix between downward compression, upward compression, saturation! So to match that you can use like mv2 from waves plus a tape saturation!

huh? It's been proven over and over that it's just a clipper.

It's okay, one of the first, has become fairly iconic, but that doesn't make it "saturating downward upward compressor"

Maybe the main function could be described as "just a clipper", but that doesn't mean any old clipper will do exactly what it does. The DIY versions like the JS Inflator have carefully tweaked parameters to make it actually null on all settings, instead of just being in the same ballpark with fixed examples.

Controlled clipping into a sine function ( to round the edges )has been used for ages .
The result is almost like a tanh function.
