Where does Waveform 12 save MIDI files?

Poof! Just like that, my work for the day is gone. I have no idea what happened. Attempting to restore backups just pulled up an empty recording session except with the plugins from my master bus intact. :bang:

I can find copies of the bass and guitars that I recorded today in the "Recorded" folder. I do not see any of the 10 MIDI drum tracks that I recorded with my electronic drum kit anywhere though :band2: . Are MIDI files stored somewhere else?

MIDI isn't stored as files, it's saved within the Edit file.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Try loading the project from the autosave files. Helped me. Recently, in December, someone also decided a similar situation, look.

(I don't know what version of WF you have, but this problem disappeared when I upgraded from 12.0.53 to 12.1.8.)

Oh wow. I wouldn't have expected that. I'm trying to get my head around how to save things now....

Is autosave the same as the .waveformbackup files? The waveformbackup files are all blank when I try to load those.

You can always save a MIDI track as MIDI files if you wish. As mentioned, they're saved to the .tracktionedit file.
[W10-64, T5/6/7/W8/9/10/11/12/13, 32(to W8)&64 all, Spike],[W7-32, T5/6/7/W8, Gina16] everything underused.

The process for saving out MIDI is Rendering, which you can find in the File menu, "Export: Render to a file..." One of the file formats available is MIDI.

I think the real question is "How can Markperrymiller get those original MIDI clips back into a project?"

I suspect the thought was Waveform might save those, like audio files, separately in a subfolder.

The answer is no--they're embedded in the edit file, as Pough noted. If that file gets corrupted, there may be a chance that some XML editing of that tracktionedit file could restore them. I don't know what the backup files would have to restore an entire project, unless we look at the earliest files that were created.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

Thanks for the information, everyone. I know I'll need to repeat those MIDI drum tracks again, but I'm prepared to take that on. I wasn't really happy with any of the takes anyway.

Interestingly, this all occurred after a crash. When I restarted waveform, it told me that it had a newer temporary copy of the edit than the one that had been last saved. I went ahead and opened the temporary copy, and that's the one that just gave me a blank project. It looks like all of the backups were similarly overwritten....

I'd put that high on a list of bugs to correct!

Thanks again, everyone.

Go through all your settings, there is an option for how often it autosaves. I've found waveform 12 pretty good both at not crashing much, and at recovering if it does. This case sounds like bad luck indeed

The only thing Waveform knows is that there are two versions. It can't tell if one of them sucks. My recommendation is when this happens, BEFORE YOU CLICK ANYTHING, go to the project folder and make a backup of the Edit file(s).

I do think that Waveform should give you the option to open the temp file as a new Edit. After all, something has gone wrong; there isn't a good reason to think that nothing else can go wrong.
