i need Help wrote: Mon Jan 30, 2023 2:59 amI really don’t get emotional in listening to or producing music. I enjoy it, I appreciate it, but I can honestly say nothing music-wise, in itself, has really invoked any meaningful emotional response (ex. “This song makes me cry.”).
The obvious question is what sort of music do you listen to? I can't imagine anyone getting emotional over most EDM, for example. It's not what that shit is for. But I can't imagine anyone belting out New Model Army's I Love the World at the top of their lungs and not having a tear roll down their cheek at some point.
I’m kinda like this in other areas so maybe its just a personality thing. A friend of mine actually helped me understand this better:
“Oh, I get it! You like food, but you don’t experience food.”
Which is a nice way of telling you you're not a wanker.

I'd say you are where I was in my teens, until I found the music that really gets to me, when I was 20. Up until then I had a decent collection for a teenager, and I definitely had a reputation in the barracks for listening to it loud, but it wasn't until one fateful day in early 1979 that music really affected me at all.

i say that as someone who has seen them enough that now the smell doesn't make me wretch any more :)
OK, rub it in. I'd love to get the opportunity to see them live. I'm sure I could put up with the smell for a couple of hours.

I am old enough to have seen New Model Army touring Vengeance plus saw them at Reading a lot later. They were always a great live band.

I can’t remember if I’ve told the story or not here, but I grew up in a tiny new town in Essex and it wasn’t exactly a place with its finger on the pulse. I was home from uni one summer and my stepbrother was downstairs playing on his computer in the lounge with his mate Dan, I stuck on the Ghost of Cain album in my room and Dan told me he knew the guy who wrote that song (Poison Street). “You know Justin Sullivan?” No, turned out Dan knew some waster guy who was going around playing NMA stuff in parties etc claiming he was in this band who did it, just about to get a big record contract and off the back of it was getting a lot of local ‘action’. Was delighted to burst that bubble. :)

also the lyrics, as a musician hit the nail on the head....plus one of the all time great lines, "Sue me if I play too long...."

This is the day of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past

You call me a fool
You say it's a crazy scheme
This one's for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line

Learn to work the saxophone
(I) I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
(I) I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues
(Deacon Blues)

My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love with those of my kind
Libations, sensations
That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home

Learn to work the saxophone
(I) I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
(I) I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues
(Deacon Blues)

This is the night of the expanding man
I take one last drag as I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be

I'll learn to work the saxophone
(I) I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world

"We're all as mad as hatters here........"

We sail tonight for singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of nod
Drank with all the chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

We sail tonight for singapore
Don't fall asleep while you're ashore
Cross your heart and hope to die
When you hear the children cry
Let marrow bone and cleaver choose
While making feet for children shoes
Through the alley, back from hell
When you hear that steeple bell
You must say goodbye to me

Wipe him down with gasoline
'Til his arms are hard and mean
From now on boys this iron boat's your home
So heave away, boys

We sail tonight for singapore
Take your blankets from the floor
Wash your mouth out by the door
The whole town's made of iron ore
Every witness turns to steam
They all become Italian dreams
Fill your pockets up with earth
Get yourself a dollar's worth
Away boys, away boys, heave away

The captain is a one-armed dwarf
He's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind
The one-eyed man is king, so take this ring

We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I drank along a colored wind
I dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

LOL!

Dude, sometimes I wonder if you really are that out of touch, or if it's just comedy. I mean I get it if it is, you are top-notch at staying in character.

A fella from Colchester, Essex, was in New Model Army.

Funnily enough, he joined the band a few years before NMA's one and only major label release.

I know, but it wasn’t the guy Dan knew. I can’t remember the band name he made up, but he claimed the band he was in had a French sounding name and they were doing loads of European gigs and most importantly that he alone wrote all the songs. He was 100% caught in the lie because he skipped off after Dan told everyone that he’d been sussed.

Back on topic...

Even a decade ago I would have smirked if someone else had suggested listening to English pastoral Classical. Maybe it's my age making me sentimental.

Wow, that's a pretty intense statement. My very unscientific observations seem to suggest that you are in the minority.
I’m on the rarer side of the personality types (INTJ in Meyer Briggs, #5 in Enneagram) for whatever those are worth lol. Mix those with a jigger of mental quirks and you’ve got a producer who’s more analytical than emotional in terms of music production and consumption lol.
choochcat wrote: Mon Jan 30, 2023 10:02 amThat's interesting. What does enjoying it feel like?
I mean, my first thought is that it doesn’t “feel” like anything lol. I’m not like a psychologist so idk what the mechanics of it are but its just like… idk its just a mental appreciation? An analytical exercise? I cognitively understand “This person is playing the [insert instrument here] with passion/heart/emotion/etc.” but I guess I just don’t feel it along with them?
choochcat wrote: Mon Jan 30, 2023 10:02 am If it doesn't connect with me emotionally in some way, I'm not going to return to it. It'll just feel empty and technical.
Two words that all my failed relationship partners would probably use to describe me lol.

lol jk jk, but not only do I produce “EDM”*, I produce and listen to Trance none the less! That’s like being the kid that “the kids who get picked on” pick on lol.

But I do also listen to a Smorgasbord of other stuff on occasion. I listened to mostly Punk music in high school. I listen to Christmas music since we just went through that season, as a kid grew up on Pink Floyd/Motley Crue/Guns N’ Roses/other rock in that vein from my dad, Contemporary Christian Music from my Mom, Rap from my brother. Jazz for when I just want some background noise.

So I don’t feel I live in a musical vacuum, but even listening to the above, as I mentioned before, I don’t like get teary-eyed or have a squirt of dopamine in my brain that would make me feel happy or whatever.

*Yeah I know EDM ≠ Trance and that there’s 172,028,963,001 different sub-genres of “Electronic Music”, but at this point I just use it as a catch all. I mean I produce Trance, what do I know lol.

Life according to Reachel from Madison Cunningham.
A beautiful song reflecting on the passing of a father.
Once your girl
I'm always your girl
When I'm here or when I'm there
Or on a plane headed somewhere
You were staring down the cars
Hoping it would be one of ours
Children and grandchildren writing you cards
But how long were you waiting for me
To make a left down your street?
It's not if, darling it's when
Was there something left unsaid?
Were your eyes green, were they blue?
What was it that I forgot to ask you?
Busy hands, I'll set 'em down
To say I love you right out loud
I'll bet you're making heaven laugh
But it feels like tears and memories are all we have
Once I knew it
I was always a know it all
Too busy too stressed out
To take your call
Thought I would always find you there
Sitting in your TV chair
While time is in a bar having a laugh somewhere
The nurse said you were waiting for me
To let go, to let it be
It's not if, darling it's when
There's always something left unsaid
Were your eyes green, were they blue?
What was it that I forgot to ask you?
Busy hands, I'll set 'em down
To say I love you here and now
Did God need a new lead in his band?
When this world and its people
Are all we have
Once your girl
I'm always your girl
