Record as a standalone clip without having it merged with the former

I just went from Cakewalk over to Tracktion cause of problems with plugins. When I record using a virtual instrument and want to record again it blends the second recording into the first and I want it to be a separate clip. Is this possible?

If you click on the input you will get some options in the bottom panel. Choose overlay new recordings instead of merge (off the top of my head, that's the general idea anyway)

Don't forget to open the bottom Control Panel. It will make everything easier.

Thanks now I made that work but the problem I have now is that I cant hear during recording what i previous recorded.

Is this audio or MIDI you're trying to record? MIDI tends to be easier...

You DO want to hear what has been previously recorded with the same virtual instrument on the same track, or are you trying to do another virtual instrument ? Always easier on separate tracks; both to visualize and control.

... or is the intention to hear and overlay new and old takes on the same track for the same instrument? Watch which tracks have been muted or solo'd when you're both recording and playing back.

I use virtual instruments (midi) so when I have recorded a track and want to continue with a second standalone clip on the same track (without merging) with the same instrument I cant hear what I previously recorded at the same time as I make the second recording. Never had problems with this in Cakewalk even though it was called "sound on sound". Nothing is on solo or muted. I can hear the track when Im just playing it back its just during recording I cant hear the previous only what I play during the recording.

Did a quick test - never "added" to a MIDI clip before.

Default seems to be that additional MIDI events are ADDED to the same clip, not as a second clip. If there are multiple clips present, it seems to add notes to the one encountered first timewise. If you start recording BEFORE the start of the clip, it will create a new one.

In all cases, it played both what was being recorded, as well as pre-existing notes. This in looped and non-looped recording.

Just curious - the VST doesn't happen to be playing in MONO as opposed to polyphonic mode? (Like a MiniMogue or patch that makes use of portamento)?
