Yamaha-SY99 Plugin?

Here's a youtube review of an SY-99 in very capable hands, as a refresher for those of us who will likely only own one if getting very lucky...
(I like IK's Syntronik version of the SY-99, since it's limited options suit my limited time and even more limited synth-sound-design skills. Making 'new-enough' presets in that instrument/effects tool is not very difficult. I suspect the SY-99 hardware has a decent learning curve if making a fully new sound. I'm in the group that finds sound layering and basic synth/effects controls quite rewarding.
Cheers

Seen from an economical perspective these guys were pretty "stupid - back then". Many people REALLY didn´t think beyond the borders of their subject and had to face the situation one day that the products they produced yesterday were their hardest competitors. The guys you mention are nothing but clever, they just have a different "economical approach", that may not look like this sometimesglokraw wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 10:08 pmWithout knowing any of them personally, I would say the traits you mention are observable at least in the forum behavior and products released by BlueCat, U-he, Surge team, Sugar Bytes, and individual creators of Vital, Odin2, and Yoshimi, to name a few whose products I use. Also, poor management at larger companies doesn't mean their work force are bad guys, without ideals or desire to make superior products.HAL76 wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 2:50 pm Those good old 80s engineers. It's not a software S99, but the new Steinberg FM Lab looks interesting. It doesn't have the RCM capability of the SY99, but the operators include the waveforms from the TX81Z plus the additional ones the 99 had, and the engine uses the same FM-X as the Montage and MO/DX. It is part of Halion 7 and available as a separate plugin; the latter is a little cheaper than F'em, so it might be worth looking at.

Hi
I had an SY85 and the SY99 looks pretty similar externally - I found it frustrating to edit the SY85, although I did prise some nice sounds out of it eventually.
One thing I liked about (some) hardware was there would be 'knockout' pre sets which pretty much sell the thing to you - the SY85 had one I remember called: 'Aztec' - often times VSTI's seem to lack a few killer pre sets which really showcase their capabilities...

It doesn’t seem that halion fm engine(montage)has 0hz operators , combined with the phase offset this has huge potential for waveshaping .DocAtlas wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 8:23 pm It's not a software S99, but the new Steinberg FM Lab looks interesting. I’d say if you really want a sy just get one .

Don‘t know, what shall be so great about the SY99. For my ears it doesn‘t sound much less cheesy, than a DX7.glokraw wrote: Tue Feb 14, 2023 12:09 am Here's a youtube review of an SY-99 in very capable hands, as a refresher for those of us who will likely only own one if getting very lucky...

The FS1R, as a successor has at least some sounds, which can be perceived as modern for today‘s standards.
What could an SY99 plugin give you, what you can not get already from today‘s VST plugins, capable of doing FM with samples?

Pretty sure it’s because you don’t know how to program fm .
Nothing cheesy about fm at all , and forget about timpanis and bells , fm can do a whole lot more
Sy-tg synths are real monsters , check out some early monolake stuff

You are right, my FM capabilities are weak, but I am getting some progress with programming nasty basses recently. I know that FM or PM can be killer, but is the SY99 really such a monster machine, that we need a plugin emulation? I would guess with F.‘em or Phase Plant or MSoundFactory one can reach the same (OK, similar) results already….gentleclockdivider wrote: Fri Feb 17, 2023 1:39 amSamDi wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 11:35 pm

…and you have to admit the sounds in this YT-video were cheesy as hell.

I didn't know that about the 0hz thing. I have a TG77, and I love the it, but I'm always curious about FM softsynths. This one might be worth my checking out, when I get a new computer that can run it.gentleclockdivider wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 9:08 pmIt doesn’t seem that halion fm engine(montage)has 0hz operators , combined with the phase offset this has huge potential for waveshaping .DocAtlas wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 8:23 pm It's not a software S99, but the new Steinberg FM Lab looks interesting. Because in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t that popular. There are plenty of synths I’d love emulations of… Fizmo… Sunsyn… but they’re probably never going to happen. Too much work and too little name recognition.

I bought Hive based on a single free 3rd party preset, knowing it would be like a therapy dog...and economically surmising that the rest of the factory collection would be of similar quality, and in typical U-he numbers. I was not disappointed, and could point out what I appreciate as a killer preset in all my U-he purchases. Same goes for the many synths in Komplete. Even in the myriad Synth1 banks, most banks have something special that the designer spent some extra time creating. My old Alesis QS8 has lots of useful sounds, which reminds me it's time to practice, and those would be good to help refresh the memory bank.original flipper wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 8:59 pm Hi

Surely it can be done. What about the Ensoniq SQ-80 plugin by Arutria doesn't that use sampled waveforms? Wouldn't Arturia have to get a license/permission to do it? :/
To be honest I wish Steinberg would Push Yamaha to allow them to do some emulations of their synths. Both Korg and Roland are making their own VST's and Yamaha is frankly sitting on their arse.

Arturia evidently has acquired the original factory waveforms for the SQ-80. AFAIK they have not disclosed the terms of any deals.ViolentAshes91 wrote: Thu Mar 09, 2023 5:06 pm Surely it can be done. But that would be a pre-requisite for anyone doing a proper emulation of the Yamaha SY99, or any digital synth that incorporated proprietary waveforms.

This guy makes great demoes, showing of what SY/TG capable of. Really nails it:
