2023: A Year in Gear (What You've Bought or Want to Buy in 2023)

Neutron rack ears are stupidly expensive, but definitely improve the experience. I'll probably buy another set. I've got to say though, that the Behringer sequencer pairs very nicely with the neutron for minimal patching tangerine dream-esque nonsense. A few minutes mucking about with the skip switches and either all your guests will have left or they'll be fighting you to fiddle with the knobs. There really isn't a good substitute for three rows of knobs/slider. I'd like Behringer to tackle the 1613 in either eurorack or just make it match the neutron/kat so you can use the rack ears.

I have my Neutron mounted in a slanted 19" desktop rack, and I love it that way. If I ever buy more Behringer synths that can be racked, that's exactly what I'll do with them. It's actually more affordable than buying most of the custom cases designed to hold 3 or 4 Behringer synths. Plus, you also have the ability to install any other 19" rack gear, something that can't usually be done with the cases designed specifically to hold Behringer synths.

I think a shiny new Behringer Proton would look really cool sitting immediately above my Neutron.

Of course, they'll have to actually release the Proton first!

I'm ordering the Enigma on release, at full price. There, I said it. I'll leave it on the table though, in front of one of my racks.



I ordered the second set of rack ears. When I got the Neutrons I thought that the patch panels to the right would keep things from being too cramped. Well, they do, but they also make it hard to follow patch flow. What I really dislike about the neutrons is that the output is routed through the distortion and delay. What I sort of dislike is how short the egs are. I hate the super light fine-tune knobs. I've thought about trying to replace them with stiff vernier dials. What I love about the neutron is the musicality of the filters, being able to modulate wave-shape, the very nice LFO, and the rock bottom price/feature.

I like them better as a part of a modular system so that you can route the VCF/VCA outputs to cleaner mixers and better quality digital effects.

What I'm realizing putting my temp rack together is that building by the 3u 84hp rack gives me serge-like panels, of sorts. I don't mean that, obviously, in terms of sound features, but in terms of a sub-set of the modular. I had intended to build my own rack ears for multiple sets of modular rails along with more complete enclosures, however, I'm rethinking some of the detail now. As much as I hate flying busses, I think that building in terms of a 38 84hp "panel" might actually be a better approach for me in terms of avoiding the endless rearrangement of modules. Sort of a hierarchical decomposition if you will. The panel is the unit of focus that is easily removeable and easy to re-arrange. I can protect the backs with some lightweight stiff material that is attached with quick-ties. It's probably slightly more expensive than just buying raw rails, but it's also less work for me, and building my own rack ears from angle-aluminum is not free.

So, up top of the Neutron rack there's the Berlin School sequencer panel with the B-sequencer and some other bits, followed by two neutrons, then a neutron support panel with a proper output, effects, some utility modules, and some things that I think are missing from the neutrons, like a ring modulator.

It also makes going portable easier if I want to . Just use one of those SKB mixer cases, pop out the panels that I want to go live with, then pop them back in when I'm done with the live gig. Not that I care much about that anymore, but I do jam at friend's houses from time to time.
