This a prefernce setting in Windows XP, although you have to use the freebie TweakUI to access it. I don't understand why they didn't make it a default option though.mjones4th wrote:And simple things, like not listing files based on absolute alpha order:

Well its not all that expensive.Sascha Franck wrote: Because it's yet another non-stock and expensive solution.
I'm a broke bloke, but my G4 933 does have 3 internal drives, (and room for a fourth) and only two of them are necessary for me. The third is my insurance plan. And I have an internal CD burner (Lite-On) an external FW burner, and an external FW DVD drive. And I chose my own RAM (bought the machine with 128).But you Mac users seem to shit money or so.
Anyway, my point is that the only differentiating factor is money. If you can do it with your PC, you can do it with your mac, albeit it will probably be more expensive. I don't blame Apple for being the more expensive solution. I blame myself for choosing them. Now I have to live with it.
But my decision did have definite positive results in some very important areas.

Ahh didn't know that! I had a guy at work, who was pretty bothered about it when he renamed his entire digital photo collection, only to find out the pics were suddenly out of chronological order.Ben [KVR] wrote: This a prefernce setting in Windows XP, although you have to use the freebie TweakUI to access it. Frankly, you'd have to be a Mac user for way more than 2 years to appreciate the way things have changed... "My workflow" hasn't changed one bit since OSX, it just takes longer to do everything... So, would that be considered an improvement to you? ...And considering my current computer is supposed to be 5 times faster (not really), and cost 3 times more than my last Mac, I'm not seeing that ROI at all! About the only advantage I see with the Mac these days, is no Internet nightmares! ...Which, I guess is worth something these days

That's indeed worth something!DHR53 wrote: About the only advantage I see with the Mac these days, is no Internet nightmares! ...Which, I guess is worth something these days
And I'm dead serious!
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Not trying to attack OSX (believe me, I could...), both ways are configurable on XP - by default it's the former, but using MS's TweakUI, you can set it to be the latter.
Think you need SP1 or SP2 though (ie. not vanilla XP).
Ah - someone beat me to it :-)

Fair enough about the length of use. I wouldn't know either way. But once you're firmly established on any platform, switching to another (which is exactly what the OS X switch was) is tantamount to pulling teeth.DHR53 wrote:Frankly, you'd have to be a Mac user for way more than 2 years to appreciate the way things have changed... Because there has to be some re-learning of things. There has to be some forgetting of things. There has to be some adaptation of workflow. Its basically inevitable.
What was your last mac?And considering my current computer is supposed to be 5 times faster (not really), and cost 3 times more than my last Mac, I'm not seeing that ROI at all!
That's a big advantage. Huge advantage. There was a guy who worked here in the Federal Aviation Administration, who got fired because a IE hijacker redirected his browser to a porn site at the most inopportune of times.About the only advantage I see with the Mac these days, is no Internet nightmares! ...Which, I guess is worth something these days

Sure you could. And I could attack windows. But the point is OS X makes me very happy. IMO, its easier to use, more configurable, and just as stable as Win XP. And it blows OS 9 out of the water.kp wrote: Not trying to attack OSX (believe me, I could...),
Now, its just my opinion. But if anyone with the intention of buying a computer asks, they're asking me for an opinion, and I'll gladly give it to them.
Along with my opinion as to the relative costliness of the platform.

W R O N G !Well, neither of them has a 'thing' so comparing the size of their third members is a bit pointless, I agree.

That's driver dependant. My MAtrox G550 drivers put both monitors into an 'expanded' resolution of 2560x1024, which puts the task bar across both monitors. I quite like it that way, actually. I could do it to just one monitor if I wanted to though.BONES wrote:With two monitors the Windoze Taskbar usually only appears on one of them.

Workflow ?
A couple of people have mentioned this...surely workflow depends on your application or host program...not the box of tricks running it ?

You can have workflow inside one program, so switching from Logic on OS 9 to Logic on OS X was no change, or workflow between programs.Wicker Man wrote:Workflow ?

In that respect OS X would slow me down if I used ridiculous things like the Dock. Hah. Cool demo, lousy product. On the other hand, with LaunchBar I'm much faster than I ever was on OS 9. Just hit Command-Space, type "Word" and it offers me any program or document that could possibly mean "Word". After I tell it once that I mean "MS word", that will next time be top of the list.
This is brilliant. You almost access programs, document, bookmarks, email address, just by thinking about them.

There isn't a thing in OSX that wasn't offered by a third party company (and better Implemented) in OS9, except for the Unix underpinnings... Which, if you really get a thrill out of typing arcane commands in the terminal (hey let's go back to the 80s!) you might really like?? I love it when I hear Mac people smugly talking about making some changes to a directory from the terminal... Like, Wooo that's really cool... Hey, we used to brag about how EASY it was to just use the damn thing! Now, it's how many Unix redirect commands do you know??? Arghhh!
