Can't Render WAV file in Tracktion

Hi all,
I apologize, I posted this question over at the Mackie site forum, but I just discovered this forum and it seems like a more happening place and thought I might get a quicker response! :D

Anyway on to the question....

I'm trying to render a MIDI track to a WAV file. I select the track I want to convert, hit the render track button, select Render to Specific File, Save the file and choose one of the two options Replace or Add Rendered Track. Then nothing happens at all!

I checked the folder I assigned to save the WAV file, there is nothing there, and no new track appears when I use that option.

What am I doing wrong? :help:

Edit: Basically what I'm trying to do is get an organ track I created with Band in a Box converted to a WAV file so I can add the Leslie speaker filter.

What VST are you using to produce audio? I couldn't tell by your question if you actually had a synth assigned to the track.

I'm using a Creative Audigy soundcard. Both MIDI and Audio tracks play back fine, but as I said, when I hit the Render button, nothing else happens.

I assume that the MIDI track needs to play back while it is rendering to a WAV file? So perhaps I am missing a step?

Well the midi track needs an instrument to provide the audio. That's why I asked about a vst instrument. What are using to playback the midi track? Are you using GM sounds from the soundcard? Soundfonts? VST synths?

According to the Tracktion settings the default wave output device is the Creative Audigy Soundcard. I didn't know I needed anything else. As I said both Audio and MIDI tracks play back fine, it's just the converting from MIDI to Audio I'm concerned with.

Right, but what is the midi Track playing? What is the first filter on the track with the midi clip you are trying to render. Just list them all. Also, click on the name of the midi track, and tell us what is selected as the "destination output for this track" in the properties area?

Right now the only filters on any of the tracks are just the Volume and Pan filter and the level meter filter.

When I click and highlight the track it shows that the destination output is the SB Audigy SW Synth [C400]

I apologize if I'm not getting this, I used to be really into the whole MIDI scene 15 years ago, but so much has changed, I'm not used to having synths INSIDE my computer! :shock:

Okay Leee, you must read the post mentioned above. To help you cheat on your assignment I''m going to tell you a couple of things. :D

1.Since you are using the sounds from your Audigy they can't be rendered. The synthesizer chip onboard the Audigy is simply recieving midi info from Tracktion. It is basically an external synth. The same as if you had your midi outputs hooked up to a Korg,Yamaha, or any other external synth. You would hear the notes playback with the program you chose but you cannot render what Tracktion can't see.

2. If you don't have any filters(VSTs in this case) available you need to download yourself a couple of freebies. Once again follow the links in the post highlighted above.

3. If you are in the U.S. p.m. me with your phone number. I have unlimited long distance and will walk you through the process. Hope this helps.

AHHH HAAA!!! *BLINK*--> Goes the lightbulb above my head!

I'm glad it didn't take me THAT long to understand this, although I have always known the difference between MIDI and Audio and know that you can't get sound from just MIDI.

But as I said I am still a little confused about all the Virtual Synth stuff. I guess I'm just an old timer used to having large racks of equipment and spaghetti cables all over the place. :hihi:

Well this post has a happy and surprising ending.
In my search to get that perfect Hammond B3 sound, I was so focused on getting the Leslie speaker plugin to work in Tracktion, I almost missed something even better.

After searching for some VST plugins I stumbled upon the Native Instruments B4 plugin....wow am I blown away!!!!

Now I just have to come up with $200. But I guess I can play with the demo for awhile.

I also tried some of the free plugins but they weren't as good.

I had the same problem getting to grips with the synth thing when I started and it took a lot longer for it to sink in. We all learn.

This should replace whats on your audigy card.
