Oscillators are basically all the same. It's at the filter stage that a 'trademark' is made. Hear all the major synths from u-he for instance. Not easy to find annoying buzzing synth sounds/harmonics in the myriad of presets, unless one explicitly goes for it. They all have some kind of warmth in one way or another.

The differences are a combination of the wave-forms (they usually don't use mathematically perfect shapes), saturation, distortion, noise, unison-distribution, filters, and a bunch of other stuff that 'analog' synths do under the hood. You can also hear differences between those synths when all filters are disabled.

That doesn't mean filters aren't important, though.

One can see on this example the huge potential of the plugin (thanks for sharing Held!).

I really really hope, there will be some thought out devices implemented which themselves will have possibilities for filter creation. We see too often devices which are not more than "adjustable presets". Finally the potential of the devices is getting lost, as the devices are one-dimensional presets and the "EDIT"-playground is often too time-consuming.

Ideally in case of MTurboFilter there would be a device, which itself would allow you to create a "Whale Song" preset without the need to study the syntax first ;)

Exactly. If this is all about a dozen varieties of a trance gate with snazzy skins, well, carry on but I'm not in the least excited. On the other hand, if this is about the TurboFilter MXXX/MSF module providing presets for a Prophet V style filter, a Moog ladder, etc. and/or providing eleven filter personalities like those found in FabFilter plug-ins, that's what I've been eagerly awaiting for ages. But there are probably not a lot of people that would know how to do that sort of thing.

I'm hoping it is extended a bit longer as I'd like to contribute, but I don't have a lot of timqr in the next 2 weeks.

About a year ago there was a thread where people shared some code and it was really helpful. I came up with something like a ladder filter, but that was before all of the new stuff was added. I think I could make something better if I have time. Anyway, I think it would help if people shared their knowledge, so everyone doesn't have to reinvent the wheel.

I've tried a few more things and came up with this. Still inspired by the Mini Moog design description I've linked to earlier. The first 4 beats are dry and then I'm playing with the Q, Character, and Drive controls

The difficult part is coming up with parameters that sound good, yet remain stable with all combinations of the controls. This design can get very messy very quickly when you hit the wrong settings.

If you want to try it, I recommend routing your midi notes into the plugin which will change the Frequency with Mod 1. And keep the limiter enabled :D

You probably meant the _design characteristic_ of 'saturation, distortion, noise, unison-distribution, filters, and a bunch of other stuff.'

Otherwise it would imply that all people designing soundsets for u-he synths are following the same approach regarding the warmth characteristic of the major u-he synths, as if all part of a same belief.

Counter-argument : I haven't heard any soundset for the Tone2 synths that do not sound a bit buzzy, a bit sizzling in the high end, giving the sounds a cold electronic tone. I wouldn't think this comes from all Tone2 sound designers following the same belief in developing sounds.

If have many soundsets (around 75 for u-he synths, many for Tone2 synths) for both types of synths and each company has its place. One for warm-sounding sounds, the other for the cold electronic soundscapes

So it can be more than filters that builds up a synth internally, that builds up the whole product for others to develop soundsets with, and summarizing to only saying 'filters are what gives a synth character' might be not detailed enough.

No, I meant that even if you turn off all FX and Filters in a a lot of synths, that kind of stuff is still applied to the oscillator under the hood. It's not something preset designers can influence. That's why those synths sound 'fatter' than say Vital or MSF.

If you want to make MSF sound like one of those synths, you need to add a lot of processing and modulation to the Oscillator module just to copy the basic saw/square wave.

Filters are an additional factor that come after.

I did years ago a brief oscillator comparison test to hear what a crude wave sounds like, eg. for many, the 'default' setting. And many did sound exactly the same. There was one exception, perhaps Biotek 1, not sure. But then I do not have a wide array of synths running under Linux. There was no MSF at that time. It was nevertheless interesting to actually hear that basically they can all start from the same sounding wave form. What happens later is what makes the character of a synth.

I know, this is a 'duh' style of observation :) One of those moments.

Within what's provided in the command line tools, is it possible to build filter topologies like ana/butterworth/etc? Or the many flavors of EQuilibrium's FIR filters and such which can create different kinds of smear/fidelity?

The syntax is fairly simple.

2 fast filters with highpass filters inside. The high pass filters reduce the Q as you get lower in pitch. The saturation keeps the volume somewhat even and provides some drive. One problem I'm having is that there appears to be some harmonics above the cut off which are a bit difficult to remove. Anyway, how do you feel about it? Any good?
