It's not only trance that's big with the producers, from what I gather.

I think dnb (from murmurings to that effect on Dogs On Acid, and the fact that it's the production board with the most traffic in the world) and IDM (there seems more online evidence of producers of this than pure listeners - it seems to be the most popular topic of "dance music" production discussions by genre on mailing lists) are up there as well. I'd also guess through online opinions and output that techno and ambient are also "production popular" to a degree that exceeds the amount of demand.

On the Blackout Audio forum I think Mark EG noted that he prefers to make techno, and listen to hard trance. It's interesting to me that this sort of disparity exists, and also suggests that there must be genres that are popular with DJs and not with punters or producers...
