Alright folks... hit me with some suggestions!

I saw a video on YT recently where a guy was using a neat little plugin that triggered a sine-wave sub bass synth sound in response to audio input from bass guitar (basically a technique to fatten up the low end on bass guitar).

I'd like to track it down -- I'll know it when I see it!

So far I've found this: https://www.kvraudio.com/product/guitar ... ynth_audio

... but that wasn't the one!

You can do with anything... Just activate side chain and put to audio input from your bass guitar

what i had in mind was something that tracks pitch as well as amplitude -- don't think sidechaining would achieve that... unless the synth happens to have sidechaining inputs for both?

Assuming you're talking about pitch-tracking stuff and not a fixed frequency sinewave (mostly used for kick drum enhancement), there are few ways to go at it.

Bass enhancers (they synthesize sinewaves tracking the input's pitch)
- Melda MBassador
- Brainworx bx_subsynth
- reFuse Lowender
- Waves LoAir and Submarine (a bit too much latency in my experience)

Pitch tracking EQs (they don't synthesize, they can track and boost the fundamental)
- Melda MAutoDynamicEQ
- SurferEQ

Audio-to-MIDI (lets you control any midi instrument/synth, which can be layered)
- JamOrigin MIDI-Bass

Those are just some names I remember.
Audio-to-midi is a bit overkill, but it also opens a whole new realm of possibilities.

Edit: I just saw you indeed meant pitch-tracked in the post above, while I was writing mine

Fantastic... I will look into those... thank you :)

I've had some fun playing with Jam Origin MIDI Bass. You can use it to trigger any other synth if your DAW supports such things but it also has some built-in sounds.

i suggest you check out VCV Rack ! The standalone version is free.
For VST/plugin functionality you have to purchase it.

i´ve tryed it with Bass btw.
i´ve also tryed the Midi-Bass, and have also in eurorack the convertor E1.
VCV Rack IS really good on this !

but i can´t tell you right now the modules i took for this.
Tomorrow late i can .
I think it has two or three pitch-tracking modules.
For amplitude, you have to take a envelope follower, in case its not inclouded in the dedicated module.

midi-bass and VCV Rack2, both work
"Plugin has turned Drug now"....and the business knows it.

Now that you mention it... what a great idea! Am familiar with VCV rack, although new to it... been meaning to put some time in with it... here's the perfect excuse :)

logic has a plugin called "subBass" that does this
any octaver (like audiority's) should do this

and:
back in the days, 70/80s that is, you could do this with a korg ms20 and its ESP
also works nicely with the plugin version, that can also be loaded as FX

yeah, i think VCV is *perfect* for this type of apllication.

excuses are overrated btw. haha. just do.
add a compressor if needed ! this could help for trigger extraction.
Thats the great thing with VCV, you have it all there !
