How does the Circuit Mod compare to the calibration features of TAL J-8 (which I rather have)?

If you'd rather have the TAL, then buy the TAL. That said, TAL modelled their J-8 on their own personal hardware Jupiter 8, so its characteristics are very particular to that synth that they had to model. As you probably know, no two Jupiter 8's sound alike when they're old and need maintenance, so as far as "accurate" emulations are concerned, while TAL's sounds great - is is not modelled "correctly". It's merely a snapshot of a particular Jupiter 8 at its particular spot in "the timeline".Korg Supporter wrote: Thu Apr 27, 2023 2:51 pm How does the Circuit Mod compare to the calibration features of TAL J-8 (which I rather have)?
Roland's ACB is arguably the more "accurate" model, as they own and have access to the actual schematics and diagrams (and patented/proprietary parts) in a hypothetical brand-new, just off-the-line, Jupiter 8. That's how the ACB modelling is marketing as working, anyway. As for the new 2.0 circuit modelling, it's pretty F'ing sweet.

Wrong ! You can have all the schematics you want, that doesn’t replace talent. They’re still trying to emulate analog, which is an incredibly hard thing to do. Glad to see Roland pushing for a better sound, but that doesn’t make them any better just because they inherited previous developers blueprints.

I revived my Roland Cloud sub for a month just to check out the Jupiter-8 (the others I had a perpetual license for). The circuit mod is an improvement, but I still much prefer the TAL J-8. In fact, I much prefer the Softube Model 84 to either the Cloud 106 or 60. Just going back and forth and A/B'ing at similar settings, it just wasn't close for me for either the Jupiter-8 or the Junos. But I'm a System-8 HW owner, so having the plug-outs on a HW synth is the big advantage. I just wish the S8 could run the TAL and Softube versions instead.
EDIT: I should give kudos to Roland for the new GUI's. They look great. Much better use of space than Arturia IMO except for that massive top menu. The browsing improvements are also nice and will make patch management much better.

Condition KnobReiKru wrote: Thu Apr 27, 2023 4:40 pm What is the difference between Circuit Mod Knob and the Condition Knob?
This simulates the slight degradation of the analog sound generator circuit over the passage of several decades, which might occur on the original (hardware) model. With this condition as the zero point, you can increase the value to simulate even more degradation for a warmer, more imprecise sound
that’s characteristic of analog circuitry; or you can decrease the value to simulate a more ideal sound with less degradation over time.
Circuit Mod
Simulates the calibration trimmer on the motherboard. Raising the value creates more differences in calibration between the voices, adding a unique kind of unevenness or expressiveness to the sound. The state of the calibration starting point (0) controlled by the trimmer differs with the [CONDITION] knob settings.
..in other words, the new Circuit Mod works in conjunction with the original Condition Knob.

Update: I missed it. Thanks.
Hi, Aloysius. Sound Canvas VA definitely has a dedicated following. We've got your request for SCVA to be updated to our list.

Downloaded the new version of the Juno 106 tonight. Stuck notes, strange sustains. Something wrong with the polyphony assignment or something. All other Roland stuff working fine.

Ok, these synths sound very nice, but the code quality obviously currently is low. Why they are publishing the plugins in such a beta state? They should not be crackled, cpu spikes at all. Also the performance should be improved, not lowered. Since the old versions weren't already fast at all, in comparison to other recent plugins. Roland, please fix this.

Hi Synthient Sound! Jon from Roland Cloud. Happy to hear you are enjoying v2! I love the Circuit Mod, it adds so much complexity and unpredictability to every patch!Synthient Sound wrote: Thu Apr 27, 2023 2:23 am Hey Jon and Brian!
First, the new preset browser is fantastic and I'm really happy with it. Circuit Mod is really great at moderate setting for making them sound like my old Rolands. And I'm ready to go Silicon soon, so thanks!
About the CPU...there are some problems I've noticed which match what others have mentioned. I've been running Roland Cloud since 2018 and am very familiar with how it performs. On my 2019 Macbook Pro (i9 2.6GHz Intel in latest Logic Pro/Ventura), the CPU is maxing out a core now with the plugin window open and lots of crackles. This didn't happen before. When I close the plugin GUI, they CPU drops to between 40-50% on that core-but-it does spike up regularly to 75-100%. Just another data point for you to pass along.
I'm very much looking forward to the JX-3P going v2 and please add my request to the hundreds already for a JX-8P.
We always appreciate the feedback and are actively testing to try and recreate the issues some users are experiencing. Some tips you can try in the meantime. There is an option to "Optimize for Lower CPU Usage", you can find this by clicking the settings button in the upper right corner of the instrument window. This can really help in large sessions with a ton of moving parts. You can also try increasing the Buffer Size from 128 to 512 samples in your daw. And depending on how much polyphony you are using you can try lowering the number of voices. You can find this option in the same drop down menu where you find Optimize for Lower CPU Usage. Let us know if you have any questions! Thanks so much!
Hey kmonkey! The TR-8S is such a powerful machine. An absolutely stellar groovebox! A plug in version of the editor would be very cool and I'll add it to the weekly request list!kmonkey wrote: Thu Apr 27, 2023 6:50 am So I have a TR-8S. I like it a lot. But sometimes I really just want to (shocker) work with my computer screen. I also have their TR editor but it is not VST plugin. So my question would be - is there any plan to release editr as a VST or perhaps there will be TR-8S VST plugin?
Hi Atlatnesiti. We are actively working to make similar updates to other Legendary Synths. Stay Tuned!Atlatnesiti wrote: Thu Apr 27, 2023 12:01 pm Well, Legendary Series of Plugins is definitely NOT VST 3 AS Native...!
The only Roland Plugins that pass verification by Cubase 12 Pro and Ableton Live Suite 11 are:
- JD-800
- Juno 106
- Jupiter 4 and 5
- Zenology and Zenology FX
When is the rest coming... It's been a long time...![]()
