Didn't even know how many of his songs I listened to when I was young... until now...
RIP Gordon... :(

My addition to that list above would be Avril Lavigne, btw...

Unlike many artist, he tended to prefer to write from his true life experiences and emotions, and that made the difference.

One of the all time great song writers.

Canada has given us:

Joni Mitchell
Neil Young
Leonard Cohen
Buffy Sainte-Marie
Bruce Cockburn
Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings
Robbie Robertson and the Band
Alanis Morissette
k.d. lang
Sarah McLachlan
Paul Anka
McGarrigle Sisters
Rush
Oscar Peterson

Gordon Lightfoot.......
Can't forget all things Rhys Fulber/Bill Leeb: Frontline Assembly, Delerium, Conjure One, Noise Unit, Fauxliage, etc.

And, my other favorite Canadian band, Grapes of Wrath

RIP, a lot of great songs there, I heard all his hits on the radio as a small kid from my mom playing AM radio, and always associate those great songs with that time.

also, to add to cryophonik's list, Skinny Puppy.

"The first time we met was outside a local award show at a club in Toronto - a legendary poet, a songwriting inspiration - a gem of a man - I loved him. He used to bring his daughter who was a fan, to our shows, and he’d sit with her in the audience getting blasted with volume for three hours - a few months back he phoned me out of the blue, for no other reason than to say he’d just watched one of our concert films and really loved it. Every time I ran into him the first thing he would ask was how many gigs we’d done that year - he’d then proudly counter with the fact that he had played even more! RIP Gord - you are the man - the greatest Canadian. " - Geddy Lee

Cool stories! I always love these personal experiences. :)

I knew a couple of people in Orillia. Wonder if they ever met him. They would've been fans.
I have 'Pussy-Willows Cattails' running around my head.

Lightfoot, aside from having the greatest real last name of anybody in folk music, is destined to become a pivotal figure in bridging the gap between folk music and country and western. He can sing, play, entertain, write, put himself down with a flair that marks an original. He's the kind of guy who can work a bar and cut through the booze with honesty; there's a strange poetry that lives within the country bar crowd that demands to hear the simple truth served on a platter of realism. Ingrained in the natural Lightfoot is the same spark of human insight that carried Hank Williams, Jimmy Rodgers, and Johnny Cash out of show business and into immortality.

Listening since i was born. My mom was a fan, too. Even after i entered the psychnautical path i still liked it but heard it less and less over the years. Then i got a copy of an old album from a friend that i was doing music with. extremely honest deep stuff imo.

Canada can keep Alanis as well.

But I will thank them for sending over Metric, Beaches, Dear Rouge, and Stars.

Never heard of them. Not a Morrisette fan, either. Basically, anything after 1977 I ignore.
Joni and Gordon are among the Immortals.
My fave Canadian band is The Guess Who (Cummings and Bachman). I can't stand RUSH, mostly because Geddy's voice makes me want to break things and hurt people. Rather have a root canal.
