The Amiga MIDI Myth - Atari ST vs Amiga War

Something that should be entertaining to watch, particularly if you were like me, in the early-mid 1990s creating music with soundtrackers, and trying to figure out hexadecimal codes to change the sounds that were produced. In fact, the first musical piece I ever created (which was half decent) was around 3 and a half minutes long and without a midi keyboard at all, just the qwerty keyboard. I didn't even have a proper midi keyboard at the time so any skills I did have would have long passed even if I was familiar with playing the keys from the age of 4, or at least trying to on my Dads, organ and my little Casio SK1 which I over-volted when I was 14 by accident. I didn't get my first midi keyboard until I was 18 and when I got a Playstation, composing with that kinda left the old Amiga 1200 midi setup in the dust, even though from a technical standpoint it was far more expandable with real MIDI connectivity.

For Amiga fans... not the spinny ones.

Looks like we are the same age. I fondly remember soldering the ram expansion so it was accessible by tracker for holding samples. (chip ram vs fast ram from memory)

Still had to use only 512K of Chipram for samples and graphics. A1200 gave us 2MB! It was plentyful :D
Yeah I was hitting trackers around '87, there were so many different on Amiga. Before that, I had a couple of strange music proggies for C64. Other was made by Domark if I remember right.

I used to market an ear training program for this puppy (A500) called Take Note. I didn't have a hard drive and remember reading books during the 20 minute compile times when I was developing it. Taught me to check my work thoroughly before hitting the button!

Yeah that 21MB HDD for A500 was a real lifesaver, until one morning it did not start. A590+ started ok, but disk would not spin. I had no backups... taught me to do backups hard way of course. :dog:

I still have a 1200 and monitor. I'm a little bit afraid of turning it on, because the last time I did colors were off... Think I need to change the capacitors

Dynamic Drums by New Wave Software was one of the best sample sequencers I used on the Amiga. It was like an early version of Fruity Loops, although it was released over a decade earlier, 1988. The software was renamed "Dynamic Studio" at a later date; a foreshadow of Fruity's "FL Studio" re-brand.
eh?

Pfft! Everyone knows the Amiga was better at everything except of those MIDI ports.

Yes, even the biggest computer magazine in Finland retroactively admitted Amiga being the better machine overall. Add MIDI and Amiga was already a sample player and a MIDI sequencer. No need for drum machine for example. 22khz 8bit drums were enough and later on 14bit via Octamed Pro using 16bit samples was just .. amazing :D

I started with an Apple ][ clone with Z80 card built in. Long before C64 or Ataris appeared… Turbo Pascal was my thing to make music. I had to solder my Midi interface for it myself…
