I imagine the extra width would be great for any timeline based work like a DAW. I had am ultra-wide screen 10 years or so ago and I really liked it. It was just too wide for the little set-up on my boat and I kept bumping into it when I walked past.

Yes, at least the updated ones will.

No, it is supplementary.

Trying to decide if 27-inch will be wide enough to be a game changer with a linear workflow or if spending double for 35-inch is worth it. any thoughts? at least i am already twice the width of my defunct MacBook Pro and 3-inches beyond the iMac

27 inches is enough. If you are too far away from your screen, getting 35 inches would be better for reducing your eye strain.

You could get something like this LG 29" Ultra-wide for around US$200.

I found an LG 32-inch 4k for $300. Seems hard to beat. Any thoughts about an ultra wide vs. a bigger overall screen?

Either works. 4K is not really needed for music production, but it can help with fitting more programs on screen without needing a second monitor.

HD works for music, 4K as mentioned above can help fitting more stuff, if the distance is right and the screen big enough.
I find I always sit 90-100 cm from the screen, my experience:

I used a 42" (16:9) which I wanted to ideally setup as four 24"; it didn't work exactly that way, but was a decent setup. Replaced it with a 34" ultrawide 21:9 + a 27" 16:9 above it. These two are from the same manufaturer, have about the same height and having the same vertical resolution, they also have about the same pixel size and density (stuff doesn't get magnified or shrinked when moved across).

I generally use the 34" 'split', using the left 2/3 for the project and the right 1/3 for the mixer or an editor, depending on the task. Very handy to use that way, but it's also great fullscreen for focussed work (e.g. project overview when tracking, or mixer channels when mixing), as a lot of information fits horizontally.
Have quite some workspaces that I recall depending on the situation, which may or may not involve the 27" screen (at times it's actually off).

Previously I had two 24", which became too small for my eyes, briefly replaced by two 27" which served me well, but I didn't like the separation between screens.

I wouldn't get anything smaller than 34" for ultrawide, but my eyesight is not the best.

Oh, tried 34" curved ultrawide at work, didn't like it one bit.

Would u go 34UW or 32 4k? at the same price it is a tough call. If I watch some vids on that would the aspect ratio be something to consider?

Post

Is the 32" 4K a 16:9? I'd still go with the 34" personally, love how I can use it like a dual monitor setup.

I also have a 32" here, although it's HD... after using a 27" on the same desk, I'm just unable to fit more stuff in there, but I very much enjoy how big and clear it is. Love it for gaming :D

There are two factors at play here, though: the resolution and my eyes.

Aspect ratio is something to consider in the sense that a 16:9 video will be full screen on the 32" and have two black bands L and R on the 34" (if preserving ratio).
Movies on the other hand are enjoyable in UW, as they are usually wider than 16:9

Best way would be to have the chance of seeing them 'live', this is all so much about personal preference... have a friend who uses a 50" as a four monitor setup, with virtual spaces and all... he would never use, let alone love, my UW setup.

Tough call, I went ultrawide already and would do it again. YMMV.
I used both Win and Mac with it, the latter is more comfortable with that screen size / distance, due to the bolder/bigger fonts (Win is 100% scaling and all default). So happy with it I actually keep the second 27" off half of the time.

If you go with a 4k monitor you may need to applying scaling, which won't work with every plugin and may cause you problems. I think the ultrawide is a safer option.
