From what I can see on the UA forum they are "experimenting" with this from a marketing perspective.

So it's likely just a crapshoot and not tied to any particular method.

I just opened an account with UAD. I didn't subscribe to their newsletter. I have exactly zero UAD products (software or hardware). Nonetheless, the code works for me (US west coast).
There must be some really weird reasoning behind this thing working for some and not working for others.

...I'm still not buying anything anyway.

It's odd that some people are left out of this promotion that would buy the product yet others, such as myself, who were included in the promotion arent going to buy. It would have made much more business sense to open it to everyone with an account on their website.

I didn't get a promo code either and I have six UAD-2 cards registered in 2 groups. Pretty strange.
