A few years ago I had intended to try knocking a selection of Windows services on the head, knowing I could restart them again, to see what difference it made. The plan was to have a batch file that restarted ones after the session. There's usually a resource price for having a better overall user experience.
Reaper is more of an engineering tool. Works for some people. I can't stand it.
Waveform is actually pretty efficient and streamlined. At least compared to the DAW I'm using more often these days (Studio One).
