I don't hate Apple. Apple is just a company, they do what they have to for their shareholders. It's the morons who are blindly loyal and have no f**king clue just how completely f**king stupid they are for doing it that I hate.
I don't give a shit about being on windows, macos or linux... they all have their weakness and strengths...
All of which are irrelevant. You don't choose your OS, you choose the applications you want/need to use and find the OS that best supports them. The OS basically chooses itself, it couldn't be simpler. If you choose your OS first, then you are potentially locking yourself into poor choices when it comes to the important tools, applications. e.g. If you are using Studio One on a Mac, you are putting up with several times more problems than those of us using S1 on Windows. It seems to have improved lately but still, why would you do that to yourself? It makes no sense, yet there are thousands of people who make that kind of poor decision every day.

The big one for me was Catalina. Apple says you can't use your 32 bit applications or plugins any more and everyone just goes "OK, whatever you say, Apple". I'd have told 'em to shove up their collective arse.
What computer did you buy finally?
I'm kind of locked in now because I've gotten too used to having a second screen, so I'm just buying the next gen version of my previous laptop, which was the next gen version of the one it replaced. It's an Asus Zenbook Duo. Just the base model, there are two or three higher tiers available but they are a lot more expensive and only incrementally better. If I was still doing a lot of freelance 3D work, I could justify it but it would be huge overkill for music production. Still, if someone else gets around to offering something similar, I'd be open to switching brands down the line but, right now, Asus is the only game in town for me.

Let me see. Apple's latest laptops are more than powerful enough for most music production workflows, have the best performance per watt of any computer in the industry, the best battery life, are dead silent, have the best keyboards and trackpads of any laptop, the best port selection, and incredibly bright Mini LED displays running at a smooth 120Hz that look better than the vast majority of dim OLED panels. You'd have to be f**king stupid to NOT buy one.

Oh please. There is no difference in performance or stability running Studio One Pro v6 on either a Mac or a PC. I have Studio One Pro installed on both my MacBook Pro and a custom built Vienna Ensemble slave PC that I use for large orchestral libraries. If anything, Studio One runs better on my Mac.

Who in their right mind is running 32 bit applications or plugins in 2023? There isn't a single synth or effect plugin that I own that I wouldn't drop in a heartbeat if it wasn't available in 64 bit.

Best keyboards. Nope. Dead silent. Nope (the new ARM ones have fan too, heard it already). Port selection? Nope, need to have hubs. Trackpad is ok but tracks my hands like hell all the time so I always use external mouse.

The whole OS has slowed down significantly since 10.10 came if I remember right and now takes 4GB by itself when launched :( - maybe the new ARM chips can now run it faster but iDunno.

I'm happy not to have to deal with this kind of crap anymore.... I did.. It was insane with my i9-9900K in the past and it seems that's getting ridiculous as time goes on.

AMD Ryzen to leave Intel 12th, 13th, 14th Gen in the dust in benchmarks due to AVX-512

BTW, AA(Acustica Audio) and Melda uses AVX-512 and probably some others.

Modern processors don't have the capabilities to do AVX512 efficiently. They just split the AVX512 instruction into 2 halves and execute them separately.

Perhaps, their existing code could use some tweaks, but it's highly unlikely to greatly benefit from AVX512 on current processors.

And intel hit the nail on the coffin for the AVX512 by disabling it on it's newest processors. There is just no insentive to write good AVX512, when intel doesn't support it and AMD does it "just because".

Don't expect the developers to fully support it for the next 5-7 years. Won't happen and doesn't make sense.

I still use an 8th gen i7 8700K. I'll be buying a new one next year. 14th gen should make quite a difference right?

Along with 4th gen nvme vs 3rd, ddr5 vs whatever I have...

I'm slowly fading out my two sata ssd drives even.

I was almost set on buying Mac Studio but I won't. Might even wait for gen 15

Post

Btw, shit got expensive in pc desktop land, too.

Asus ROG z790 400€+
i7 13700K roughly 400€
Add ram and gen 4 nme drives and we're speaking mac studio prices (alas mac studio with less ram, less disk space and arguably slower processor)

Thinking about this setup, adding RME AiO Pro into it later. DPC of Z790-P worries most, otherwise I'd hit it now.
Anyone know a case as large as XL R2 but WITHOUT glass panel? Define 7 XL would be otherwise but it has awful glass...

I have an older Asus Prime board. It's not terrible but not great either.

All I want from motherboard is 1. low DPC, 2. no extras meaning no wifi, bt, or extra controllers, 3. or if 2. they should be able to be completely disabled via BIOS
