There are quite a few subharmonic plugins, but RBass does this psychoacoustic harmonic effect that is really hard to find in another plugin, except maybe MaxxBass.

It doesn't add lower harmonics, but higher harmonics that give you the perception of something sounding lower, but without blowing out the bottom end. I'm sure there is at least one ow tow other products out there that do something similar, but I wouldn't know what personally.

That's certainly a good find. It has extra features too.

Though I'd be tempted to drop it in a few mixes alongside RBass and do a side by side comparison. If you're replacing a plugin with another product, you'd want to be sure that it does the job at least as equally as well before committing to your decision.

Otherwise you could end up shooting yourself in the foot.

Substrate - Subharmonic Bass Booster

Currently trying to turn noise into music. Is boutique the new old?

Different things.

Substrate generates sub bass harmonics, RBass generates upper harmonics.
BTW. Sometimes Saturn 2 by Fabfilter can do a decent job on a bass track (e.g. 808).

Also, you probably know from now on all Waves plugins are no longer sold separately, but only via subscription plan, and if you apply for it, you lose all your permanent licenses!
edit. I received an email with apologies and that perpetual licenses will be available along with new subscription models. Phew.

I stumbled across someone recommending Bark of Dog by Boz Digital Labs as RBass alternative. It's free.

I think Bark of Dog is just a resonant high pass and/or Pultec-ish curve like this (excuse my MS Paint skillz):

Which is not a good replacement for RBass. The key difference is that RBass saturates, Bark of Dog does not - and furthermore, using filtering and wet/dry recombination, it saturates ONLY the low end.

This, however, is a good alternative for RBass, though not at full price :o Pretty sure I got it for $20.

Bark of dog is more a "Voice of God" alternative not recreating rBass

Denise Bass XL is my goto toy in that regards - find it more pleasing than rbass

One more bass plugin to check:

Titanium 3 Basstard (free) - more to use in a mix, then on master, so maybe more a RBass than MaxxBass alternative.

Root One is the closest thing to RBass IME. It's far more refined though and gets weird when you try and push it(random phase modulation)it's so refined though when used subtly it can be used on the master with no caveats. I'd never consider using RBass on a master, but it's great on a track level and Root One is the only one that gets in a similar ballpark of the sound

Guys, we're talking about upper-harmonic saturation of low frequencies - not sub-harmonic synthesis.

The best "sub-harmonic bass generator" is a sinewave patch on a synth - don't be lazy and do it properly

Massive lack of comprehension about what RBass does, it’s true. How can folks say that a sub bass generator is ‘close’ to RBass…?

For me, after Waves thankfully backed down on their subs model, carrying on with the cheap/ once free RBass was clearly the best option.

YMMV, as car owners know.

Not sure who either of you are addressing, but Root One does more than just sub harmonic generation regardless of what their marketing says about the plugin. Only one of the parameters actually even deals with adding content beneath whatever the fundamental of the material is, the rest when dialled in a bit function similar to RBass/MaxxBass algorithm, especially with the addition of controlling the dynamics, but it doesn't get as aggressive as either MaxxBass, or RBass though. The latter are really good at filling out synths with thin low end, not just the frequency content, getting some body or sustain in there that makes them stand tall in mixes with low crest factors(since actual bottom end content like a competing sub for instance will create problems down the line). Not even Root One can do that and neither do any of the other suggestions mentioned thus far

My only point was that in a thread seeking free alternatives to a plug-in that currently costs $29 (and doesn’t add sub harmonics), many of the suggestions are way off base (pun intended).

Yes, although apparently v pricey, Root One does seem to have an interesting feature set beyond just subs (just gone to read the SOS review, not actually tried it).
