Can I change the volume of a continuous audio track in various places?

Is there some way I can vary the amplitude of an audio track, i.e. make it louder in some places and quieter in other places? I think I might have seen a plugin that overlays a volume line along the track that you can drag up or down wherever you want to alter the volume, but I may be wrong. Many thanks.

Rather than tell you the answer, I am going to suggest that you download the V11/12 user guide:
https://www.tracktion.com/training/manuals
and read chapter 35 on Automation because that covers what you want and lots more besides.

Just a note that you have things backwards - there is no plugin that overlays a line on the track; there are automation lines (that can be shown over a track) that can affect any parameter of any plugin, including volume.
I'm going to recommend that you take advantage of Waveform's modular plugins section and add another volume plugin to be affected by the automation. That way you can still use the last volume in the chain to change the overall volume level the same way you'd normally do. You won't be fighting the automation.

Surely there must be consensus by now...

Both here in the sticky messages at the top, and on the Waveform site, there are links to Bill's videos. Highly recommended. For every 10 minutes you watch, you may end up saving 20 minutes of frustration. Plus, learn lots of little tricks along the way.
Nice thing is, there are about 20 on different topics, and they're all of nice bite-size lengths (5-8 minutes, I think) with a narrow focus on each one. So, pattern generator, GrooveDoctor, can be "left until later" while you go through the basics.
