I like the TAL J-8 but I also like the Roland Cloud in general. I think the plugs sound great.CoolColJ wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 12:43 pm Did another comparo of the Jp8 emulations, and I think the Roland cloud version, while not a true emulation of my unit, it sounds the closest to it, and reacts the most similar as far as the filters and tonal colour.
The bright, wet, shiny, clear tone.
Really lacking the dual mode, and the arp plays differently
I always felt that J-8 sounded a bit dryer and less shiny than my JP8
But is a truer emulation with the dual mode and arp feel.
The Arturia one is like somewhere inbetween I guess
Also lacking in dual mode - sigh, which is like a key thing in the Jp8
And the Arp plays nothing like the real thing where the top notes stop beyond keyboard range.
Similar to the JP4

Interesting.. I mentioned I think elsewhere, I recently tried v2 of the Roland Cloud's JP-8 and didn't like it at all, even with my single layer expectations.
It's been years since I have played a real Jupiter 8, unlike you who has one right there
..
So I can't speak to accuracy at all, but what I find interesting and said in that elsewhere thread, is I don't remember liking the real Jupiter 8 as much as I like the Tal J-8..Maybe back then I was too much an oberheim guy to truly appreciate the wonders of the JP-8, but I would have loved to go back in time and see if I liked the hardware more than I remember liking the hardware.

I have always loved Roland. Admittedly, RC wasn’t authorizing my plugins today even though i have an active membership. The Jupiter 8 and SH2 is a deadly combo.

I have loved Roland hardware (still have two working S-760's and a JV-2080), but not so much their software.... though the software D-50 really surprised me, how much I like it.
But I have been trying their software JP8 and 4 and Juno 106 and the Juno 106 is the only one that comes close to me saying I like it.

Btw I asked on the Roland Cloud thread and don't recall getting an answer.
Can one really NOT set the arp speed on the Roland Cloud's JP-8?

You can, and sync it to DAW as well.

order is - Roland Cloud JP8, Arturia Jup8 V4, Tal J-8
Single oscillator PWM, through 12db filter, which has a unique sound on the real Jupiter 8.
Tried to get them as close as possible
Portamento acts differently in each
Played from a software Arpeggiator, as the onboard ones don't react the same way.
Tal J-8 works like the real thing, after recent updates
Roland Cloud sounds the closest to the real thing colour and tone wise, and the way the filter reacts
PWM on the Arturia sounds off.
Tal J-8 sounds dryer than the real thing, overall.
I tweaked the calibration controls on it to be closer, bumping VCO brightness to 2, drive to 1, and resonance to 2.

The Roland Cloud SH2 sounds close to my real one, the tonal colour and character similarity is so uncanny.perpetual3 wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 2:05 pm I have always loved Roland. Although a touch less omphhh in the lower range when hearing both in the same room, as opposed to recorded digital audio

What does 'dryer' mean in regards to audio and synthesizers? Usually that term is used to discuss level of FX, not raw synthesizer tone, so I have no idea what you mean.
Furthermore, your audio example does not include audio of 'the real thing' either, so I'm wondering how you came to this conclusion. We certainly can't, from the provided audio.

Would have loved to hear the real one, though since it doesn't respond to midi (unless you got yours modified), you couldn't trigger it from a software arp.CoolColJ wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 3:29 pm ......

Any chance you can do the same sound on the JP-8 compared to the Tal J-8, since you say their arps behave similarly.
Please

Listening back the J-8 does sound darker, maybe that is why I like it so much.CoolColJ wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 3:29 pm .........

Dryer as in the difference in harmonics.mholloway wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 3:53 pmWhat does 'dryer' mean in regards to audio and synthesizers? Usually that term is used to discuss level of FX, not raw synthesizer tone, so I have no idea what you mean.

Like valve colouration sounds wetter and more glowy, more second order harmonics.
It's very apparent when I'm playing both in the same room.
Real JP8 has that glowy shiny sound, of those discrete VCOs.
TAL sounds less like that, more dry, like CEM VCO chips.
I tried to compensate using the calibration controls, but only up to a point.
In the past I find using the Nebula N-ten-A4 plugin, which adds a glow colouration helps.
Sampled harmonics from a Neve 1084 preamp
https://www.kvraudio.com/product/n_ten_ ... oundmaster
I'll do another clip comparing to the real audio, some simpler sounds.

Yeah the real thing is much brighter. At least my unit is, an earlier 12 bit model.zvenx wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 4:14 pmListening back the J-8 does sound darker, maybe that is why I like it so much.CoolColJ wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 3:29 pm .........

I move the calibration controls - VCO up to 2 to get it similar and also increase the resonance to 2. but still not quite the same

Ok just to note that yours may not sound like Patrick's. Also I assume they have the same chain of amp/speaker etc.
You saw my screen shot of the RC JP-8? Can you do a screen shot of yours where the tempo slider is?
