hey guys, wondering what you smack on your drum bus?
atm i only have the townhouse comp on there and sometimes SATIN as well. so what do you throw on the bus?
and do you have maybe an alternative to townhouse comp? so far it seems pretty great to work
thx

Baby audio IHNY-2 and Baby audio smooth operator for drums and for instruments I use Waves TG12345 on another bus, on the master I place a Waves AR TG Mastering rack.

I am getting into the new Melda solution, MDrumStrip. Very promising, works great for rocky drums. It covers all single tracks, overhead situations, bus, and master.

if a drummer hits it, it goes in my drum buss.Caine123 wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2023 4:30 pm thx a lot guys, will check, overall do you put kick, snares, toms on the drum bus or any other elements?

why are you putting things on a drum buss? (or any buss)
we do it, to bring elements together, we wish to process together.
do you want the drum machine to sound like one coherent piece, or separate? neither is right, they are choices.

im playing atm around with it, i love to have kicks, Snares and toms on it, it gives a much better oomph, i dunno why but just a small Drum bus makes such a different. i just noticed when routing also the hihats on my drum bus they got a lot louder and i turned them down individually, but not really much noticing a difference letting them on the bus or not coherencewise, i need to test it on other projects. im going to post an example soon.

the best thing you can do, is approach every track as a new track.Caine123 wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2023 5:01 pmthx a lot vurt!vurt wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2023 4:50 pmwhy are you putting things on a drum buss? (or any buss)

don't do what you did last time, unless that is what's required.
cookie cutter one size fits all, is not going to work.
use your ears, do what needs doing.
don't just use a plug in because someone said you should compress here or eq there.

All of the drum / percussion elements normally go there. Sometimes I also put the kick(s) and snare(s) to a bus, process that and then route that to the drum bus. It normally then goes out to my hardware API 2500 (which makes it slap with absolutely minimal effort), with some parallel saturation and compression as required.
Processing the drums in a way that conveys the meaning and feeling of the song / track is really important. If it's e.g. an aggressive rock track I'd be inclined to use a bunch of parallel compression with 1176 clones (that give an aggressive kind of compression, and add distortion etc).. I'd use a high ratio so that it's audibly compressed and smashed, supporting the meaning and feeling of the song.
On the other hand, that would be completely inappropriate for a gentle pop love song (because it would work against the message of the song). In this case I'd use a compressor that's much more gentle, compress it with a low ratio so that it gels together and adds body and warmth but doesn't sound heavily compressed or aggressive.

Depends on the track. I compress & eq individual elements first if they need it, fex. snare heavy transient hit or body. Then they go to drum group, which has if needed, some of these: kush 458a/twk, glue/kotelnikov/mu, eq.

Just pretty light compression for glue normally. But lately for acoustic drums I'm experimenting with tape reel models on the drum buss, the I.K ones specifically.
