guitar players tend to just stick with guitar or guitar-like thingies
players like jimmy page, jeff beck, eric clapton, jimmy hendrix, etc

keyboard players tend to play other instruments
players like john paul jones, paul maccartney, john lennon, etc

the ramones have no keyboardist?
punks don't like complexity?
keyboard must therefore be more complex?
guitar must therefore be simpler?
and easy to play?

if there are punk bands that plays complex music
then those bands are not "real" punk bands?
they are just really prog bands or who knows what in disguise?

Agreed! Most people have tried playing guitar at least once in their life. How many people actively still doing it? Very few.

I wonder what would be the stats for other string instruments or perhaps relatively easier for beginners like piano? Probably more people will stick to it.
IMO the piano is quite a bit harder to learn and play than the guitar. For me the biggest hurdle
with the piano was two separate and complex melodies on each hand, where on the guitar that doesn't
really happen as much unless your playing classical guitar or something, and even then. It's not
that it doesn't happen, but I notice the majority of amateur players I've heard, don't seem to concern
themselves with individual notes a lot times on the guitar.
That's more or less in line with my thoughts, with the exception of fingerstyle or classical, where you have the thumb acting independently from the other right-hand fingers, as well as the left-hand acrobatics.
I can do very basic things with Travis Picking, but I'll never get proficient at it unless I woodshed for about a year, and I just don't have that kind of drive at this point.
If I were just starting out, I would take lessons with a competent teacher, and learn to use my right hand right off the bat.

Because, being an autodidact means learning certain things in less than optimal ways, and once those patterns get ingrained, it,s difficult to break them and reset them.

I think if a person really engages with guitar and finds the right resources for how to play they can achieve quite a lot in a short amount of time and have a lot of fun. But if you're just adrift trying to pick stuff up by chance with no real drive or concrete goals, and if you haven't conditioned yourself to effective practice habits, I think it can be very discouraging.

Many musicians struggle with negative thoughts. Like athletes, we have to actively work on healthy cognition because the job of learning the instrument often involves identifying points where our playing breaks down and addressing issues.

if the metal strings hurt your fingers, try starting out on air guitar, just to get the fretboard and chord shapes learned :)

Yeah, air guitar is an easy choice.

I tried air cajon once, but I looked ridiculous and I kept falling on my ass! :hihi:

Sadly, that's probably his single greatest contribution to mankind. :scared:

Or at least, it's one of his least offensive!

Hi

18 months into learning to play the Guitar and I would say that the question is wrong!

The question simply doesn't signify any level of ability, so my friend who jammed with me back in the day with a 3 string acoustic whilst I played drums was 'playing' the guitar - did he even know the names of the 3 remaining strings?

Having purchased my second guitar recently (a Harley Benton SC550) I am going through a phase of thinking/feeling that some guitars are really quite a piece of mechanical engineering and somewhat cumbersome, with a set of heavier gauge strings it really can be a challenge just to practice for an hour...

So gleaming some sounds out of a guitar is pretty easy, but if your wondering if gaining some level of competence (let alone excellence) is easy I would say no, it comes down to years of (almost) daily practice - I like playing Reggae chords/progressions and If I continue with my 1-4 hours a day, I expect to be somewhere around kinda competent in a couple of years time, at the moment I can play a fair selection of chords with varying levels of screw up's, theory knowledge is coming hand in hand with the snail pace general progression and I don't have to 'force' myself to practice.

You have to be realistic in what it is you want to accomplish I suppose...

I started playing as therapy after an accident left me with a semi paralyzed right arm.
When I first started, I couldn't grip a pick properly; I had this pick thing that held about 7 or 8 picks stuck to the body of the guitar. My friend told me that jamming with me quickened his reflexes from ducking out of the way of flying picks; in the early days, I think I went through every pick in the holder when I jammed a 5 min song.
