Brainbeat brought up the question of "covering" in a comment on my Soundcloud page, and I thought it was worth repeating my reply here, to see how others feel about this sometimes tricky subject:
"Accused of covering "There's a Hole in my Bucket??" Oh, the shame. I did wonder about that, but it's common in modern music to do variations on old and classical tunes. Beethoven's Pathetique is famously plonked into Midnight Blue, and Billy Joel had a piece of it too. Whiter Shade of Pale and a good chunk of the Beatles playlist are based on classical pieces, but not considered covers. So I took my chances - I couldn't resist making the musical joke. Anyway, given the lack of mixing, it doesn't stand a chance of getting in the prizes, so hopefully the question is moot."

Thanks to all who commented, BTW.

In this case the quote is quite lengthy and blatantly obvious, so I can see why Brainbeat would bring it up. Anyway, this whole "look how smartly I can quote other peoples work without it becoming a cover" thing is becoming a bit tiresome now, imho. OSC partcipants are clearly asked to come up with original work. Why not just do so and avoid any zero fun discussion ? It's really not that hard. And not particularly restrictive either. There are other places in which these things can be be done. Maybe try the Music Café ?

Which is also a fine place to be for anyone can't live without sounddesign by external effect.

Voted. Lots of good tracks.
Thanks to BJ and Richard, as usual, for holding OSC together!

To answer some comments on SoundCloud in one go:
Yes my song structure is chaotic - and increasingly so. Doctor Entropy is having his evil ways :) Yes it gets quite silly!

The retro synths made me think of Crockets Theme from Miami Vice, so I thought about an 80s duo - but also Scientists from the Victorian times that explored the concept of Entropy (which I think about a lot).

Entropy is thermodynamic concept. The universe is running from a low entropy (high order) to a high entropy (high disorder) state.
At a small scale - there is no arrow of time. Atoms just bounce off each other. If you play the film backwards it looks similar. But on a large -human - scale - the past definitely looks different to the future. Eggs fall onto the floor and smash into disorderly pieces. You never see this happen in reverse. But the reverse IS possible - just extremely unlikely.
The big question is - why is the past lower entropy than the future? It's a good thing it is - else it would be a very boring universe in equilibrium where nothing happens (like life). This puzzled scientists like Boltzmann and Gibbs in the 1800s. They did not know about the Big Bang model.

ANYWAY - I recorded me playing about with the rhythm buttons on Pops - pressing buttons fairly randomly like a child would. And with increasing frequency as the song progresses. And often with multiple rhythms selected at once. And sometimes half way through a bar!
I then gave myself the challenge of writing music to fit this increasingly chaotic blueprint. And also to come up with a story to fit :)
It's silly and I don't expect it was to everyone's taste - but I think I made a few people smile.

I agree to ELEX almost fully, except to "zero fun". In this round we had two work with two (!) full buckets and Spridgeon hassles musically with an empty bucket. I like this humor! And those who don't may simply score this track lower. So I, for one, would turn a blind eye in this case!

Join the club: I got criticized for how I make music and tried helping others, so I left the Discord and stopped saying anything that wasn't necessary. Can't criticize what isn't said, right? Make my entry, post it, wait for results - that's it.

I've done a few OSCs, and always carefully followed the rules. On this occasion, I couldn't resist making a musical joke to hopefully give some folks a laugh. I didn't expect it to be considered a 'serious' attempt at a cover, just a bit of fun, and wasn't aware that the cover issue had been thrashed out on this group before (I haven't been on it for very long.) Anyway, I'll try to put the lid back on the can of worms and avoid controversy in the future.
