if you play the same set every night, that's a problem with laziness, not with set lists.? ? ? wrote: Fri Sep 01, 2023 1:15 amSet lists are shit. It's work, hence boring, to do the same set every night. To do a whole tour where every night is the same shit, no thanks; leave that for those that perform to tape.funky lime wrote: Thu Aug 31, 2023 3:15 pm i kind of dread set lists, personally. to me it's like scheduling sex positions in advance. by the time we finish the first song, i'm already second-guessing the plan. having a list of songs to play is nice, but i've pissed off bandmates plenty by calling audibles throughout a show
It makes it fun for the band and fans when you change up the song order.
Frank Zappa mentioned in an interview he never plays the same solo twice.
So what you hear on record you won't hear live. Amen to that.

Fun? How is that relevant to anything? We don't get up on stage just to play songs, a good set ebbs and flows, just as a good album does, and it is really important to us that we do our best to achieve that with every performance. We've never played the same set twice. That would be boring because I'd only get to make one list.? ? ? wrote: Fri Sep 01, 2023 1:15 amIt makes it fun for the band and fans when you change up the song order.
Solos are for wankers anyway. Best avoided entirely.Frank Zappa mentioned in an interview he never plays the same solo twice.

Yep, the vast majority of it is absolute krap, no doubt (also krap). It's so f**king cliche, I think we've got one song on our last 4 albums with something you might call a solo in it. And for someone to say "oh, I never play the same solo twice, maaaaan" is so f**king pretentious it makes me wanna puke.

Hah, as someone who enjoys playing solos, i'm inclined to agree ... probably 95% of them that I've heard (or 100% of my own) are trite and/or masturbatory, and tend to overstay their welcome.
Zappa did a lot of things I like, but I find his crunchy note-salad solos (like those of many others) generally forgettable.

Oops lemmie fix that:funky lime wrote: if you play the same set every night, that's a problem with laziness, not with set lists.
"Set lists are shit *and* it's work , hence boring, to do the same set every night."
I don't consider, for example, Madonna "lazy" - far from it in fact - even though she does play the same set every night. It's to accomodate the visual performance akin to a Broadway play.
Would I join Madonna's band? Definitely. Would I get bored doing the same set night after night after night? Definitely.
I prefer the DJ method where songs played at a given time is determined by the mood of the audience.
Get a nice sized catalog of songs, learn them all, then be ready to go "On the Fly" on stage.
Like an American Football coach calling out plays, call out the song as you go.

Totally understand. But that would mean not playing the same set twice would be fun. How is fun relevant to anything? We've never played the same set twice. That would be boring
I could care less about albums ebbing and flowing. Give me songs. If an album's got 10 songs you better give me a solid 8 songs at the least.a good set ebbs and flows, just as a good album does
Noel Gallagher said it best - No fillers.
No B-sides that cannot be A -sides. Did he achieve that? IMO no, but he was really damn close.
It's the one band from the 90s lot who managed to pack in arenas in the States and that was with solid songs standing on their own as opposed to making albums "ebb and flow". I'll go to the beach when I want ebb and flow.
SHHHH -keep it down! Lots of wankers roam the KVR grounds; don't wake them up.Solos are for wankers
If you want a good example of wankery, your obsession with song lists for live shows is one.
Akin to a self indulgent finger tappin G soloist going for 10 minutes, you could care less if the crowd gets bored or shows no interest in your overly crafted two hour (or however long) live set.
You see in others what you see in yourself. Point the finger at someone and you got three pointed back at you. Judging others by....ok I'll shut up (yes you can quote that and say "please do").for someone to say "oh, I never play the same solo twice, maaaaan" is so f**king pretentious it makes me wanna puke
For the record (33 1/3), Frank didn't say that to impress anyone or seem significant. He mentioned it because he was asked a question on playing live. He mentioned it's more exciting playing something different every night hence the example of different solos every show.
Ask not what your DAW can do for you, but what you can do with your DAW
