personally, im not that interested atm, too early for it to be useful in my world.

though, like anything if i hear something cool, im not against grabbing it because it's ai!
as has been said, it's a tool, like any other.

not like we are actually dealing with the sci fi ai, hell bent on our destruction or even a hugely intelligent entity or anything.
at that point ill be long dead, but i reckon once ai is at that level, it will see us as nothing more than amoeba, and be quite uninterested in us.

The companies are already finding ways to monetize it, so my feeling is you'll have to pay to use it.

ChatGPT has already extremely impressed some musicians.
A lot of people are impressed by a lot of sub-par, imo absolutely cringe-worthy lyrics... let 'em have their AI-crap - I for one am not writing my songs for them anyway. :-)

I was going to say the vocals still need a human but then I remembered the video of Plankton from Spongebob singing Given up by Linkin Park including brutal sounding screams

What I've heard from AI vocals is way better than anything I've heard with AI music and AI lyrics.

AI will change things, and likely dominate music production.. but we can still play our acoustic guitars around a campfire

Lost Tapes of the 27 Club was an impressive demonstration of how music can be created with AI.
They somehow used AI to create music in the style of Amy Winehouse, Nirvana and others. The aim and focus of that project wasn't AI though, but to raise awareness for mental health issues in the music business. The site itself doesn't feature the songs anymore but you can find them on YouTube.

On TikTok I've heard Frank Sinatra's voice sing today's songs in his style. It's funny because of the contrast of Sinatra's elegant style and the lyrics that are quite the opposite. It really sounds like him. Mind-blowing.

enroe wrote: Fri Aug 04, 2023 7:20 amAnyone who has thought along until this point will notice one thing: the AI composes the song, writes the lyrics and produces the song. Finally, the AI mixes and masters the song. At the end, the AI listens to the song - and evaluates it.

This is a closed AI loop: The human being is no longer present
anywhere.
Rubbish. The AI does what the human tells it to do, it can't initiate action of its own volition. Without human interaction, nothing will get done at all.
Anyone who wants to get involved in this cycle - maybe even
want to become creative himself or herself - will have to realize
brusquely and hard that he doesn't fit in: He is eternally too
incompetent, too incapable, too slow!
That's already 99% of people around here, compared to what your average Joe would consider a good musician/artist. It's just another avenue of competition, nothing to be afraid of or even concerned about. Quite the opposite, we've already harnessed AI to write lyrics and perform vocals on our next album. Plus, of course, I've been using Ozone's Master Assistant to help me master our last three albums. It's fuckin' awesome!

Garbage in->garbage out still applies so if you aren't guiding it properly, of course it's not going to hit what you consider "the mark". I've had great success with AI, far beyond my expectations.
foosnark wrote: Fri Aug 04, 2023 12:49 pmHave you seen the backlash about AI-written articles on websites? The writing style tends to suck, the articles are full of errors and there's just not any point.
Again, I'd suggest that's down to poor guidance because I've got incredibly good stuff out of AI. e.g. I was looking for a bit of inspiration, put in a phrase, asked for two paragraphs of prose and got a set of lyrics so good I only had to change one word. Then I thought I'd get another AI we use to do some guide vocals for me, to help me learn those lyrics, and the AI did such a great job, with great pacing and perfect emotion, that we've used them as the vocals in the song. Better still, when we gave the album to our label last month, our manager said that was the best song on the damned album. (It's definitely my favourite song but I don't think it's the best song, as such.)
enroe wrote: Sat Aug 05, 2023 9:12 amThe AI also writes every song - after just a few specifications. Any type of music, new, old, progressive or
anything else - is created from scratch by the AI in a matter of
seconds. This degrades songs even further - to a kind of everyday
background noise. Songwriters don't actually exist anymore - or
they are very isolated autistic critters ... :D
Why would song writers no longer exist? I can't see why I would stop writing songs just because AIs were writing songs. There must already be hundreds of millions of songs out there and that doesn't stop us making new ones, why would a few billion more? It's not a game of quantity, there can never be too many songs.
foosnark wrote: Fri Aug 04, 2023 12:49 pm Misinformation/disinformation spread by chatbots to people all too

We already have a dramatic erosion of society through conspiracy theories and chatbot campaigns. AI will exacerbate this considerably - one can only hope that politicians will also recognize this danger and take appropriate measures. :)
Again, it will only do what people tell it to do and I don't see how it could be more annoying that the way spam goes around now. Similarly, we don't need AI to feed morons, people do that well enough already.
aMUSEd wrote: Sat Aug 05, 2023 11:23 pmYeah without actual life experience, or feelings, or any real sense of meaning, anything created is just going to be a bunch of cliches strung together to mimic the appearance of creativity without actually creating anything new or meaningful
You mean like every pop song, ever? I don't see how AI could do worse than Max Martin.
Synthman2000 wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 12:12 pmIt'll probably be mixed like trash, "mastering" well even after 10 years AI mastering is beyond a joke.

If AI do any of the following
- write part of the lyrics
- write part of the melody
- play any instrument or vocals and generate audio for the production
- and so forth...

AI should be listed as co-writer and also have part in any royalties distributed by organisations for intellectual properties, what ever they are called internationally.
- in sweden STIM is such an organisation seeing to that everybody gets payed properly

This is how it works human to human and should also be the way for human to AI.

so you are suggesting, ai bots, should have their own bank accounts?

i don't think they have rights? (although i know this was discussed in eu parliament im not sure what came of it?)

that said, we recently had a small protest at parliament here, "support artists not algorithms".
which i was kind of behind, until i saw the placards. none of the ones i saw, did anything creative, was just black marker on card.
piss off.

Here’s the bright side of AI: it will flush out the poseurs. I just watched a second season of a show that I had previously enjoyed, and it may as well been written by AI, because the story and script sucked.

I think these things suck because management, who is usually devoid of creativity, starts forcing decisions and putting their own spin on things. Writers become despondent and start phoning it in. I’m seeing this happening in real time on my current project. It’s sad. Here’s how it went.

We needed a plot outside for an RPG. Even though we had known this was coming, no one on the staff seemed to have thought about it. Why? No idea. So I supplied a few ideas that I thought were really good and interesting. One was rejected because they thought the publisher wouldn’t like it. Mistake #1. Why make someone else’s decision for them? You never know what a client will like. The work was done, including a full story outline and some concept art. Why toss it?

But they really liked my other idea, so we went ahead and started working on that. When we were about done, someone from design decided that he felt slighted and he came up with a treatment. His was just as good, but that’s not the point. Now we were back to the starting point, weeks of work wasted. Management should have stepped in and said, “we’ll do that story for our next game.”

So now we are scrambling to do all new art and assets for a totally different story. Of course it’s not going to be as good as the work we had been polishing for weeks.

By then we had a new art director and he started out… doing… nothing. He sucks. His idea of an art Bible was a few images from other games he found on the internet. Thematically, they had nothing to do with the new story at all. I spoke to him and offered to handle the doc and he seemed relieved and told me to go for it. I spend a week coming up with color palettes, concept art, fonts, etc. He praised the work and said he only had a couple of small changes he wanted to make. He proceeded to add his contradictory images from unrelated video games and then published the doc. At least we now had something to go by.

And then we completely ignored the whole document, including his contribution. Each artist seems to just be going rogue. Assets from one artist seem to be made for a completely different game than the others.

Now, for fun, design decides to completely change up the game story. Now we have a bunch of mismatched art and a theme that is totally lame in comparison to the previous story. Why? Because someone was afraid the client might not like it.

So now our art looks like generic game asset soup with a story that is very thin. Someone literally said the story doesn’t matter… in an ARPG! Now I spend all my time recording really bad VO that was written by a Jr. Game designer and making a lot of iterations of weapon sounds.

Now, don’t get me wrong. We have plenty of creative people on staff, but management are not among them. I’d argue that if our CEO had just used ChatGPT and Midjourney instead of making us run around in circles, we would be further along and have better results. Not great results, but at least uniform.

I could go on all day about other projects I’ve worked on that had similar problems. I’ve also worked on projects where the creative team was respected and had a leader who kept everyone on the same page. Those projects always end up a lot better in almost every way. One game won best new game at a GDC, and we literally spent 6 months on it, but made such fast progress because we had a good team leader and a clear direction. We spent all our time making stuff and polishing and zero time wasting second guessing decisions. A major publisher bought the game and we all got a bonus.
