So I'm trying the free version of Tracktion 12 and so far I like it but I seem to be having an issue setting the MIDI notes in the drum sampler. For example:

In the image above, note #36 is not a side stick but a kick drum in the MIDI spec. #38 is not a kick but a snare. #46 is not a clap and so on:

Midi Spec:
36 Bass Drum 1
37 Side Stick
38 Snare Drum 1
39 Hand Clap
46 Open Hi-hat

I always use GM midi note assignments so there is consistency between drum plugins so when I hit the bottom left drum pad on my controller keyboard it always triggers a kick drum etc.

Using Midi learn in the drum sampler seems to select arbitrary assignments that don't match the Spec. Anyone have experience with Tracktion's drum sampler?

Any way to override those incorrect assignments and manually set the note numbers and drum names to the desired layout ?

Thanks in advance. :tu:

I think you can set the name and note just by clicking on them where they appear beneath the waveform view (bottom centre-ish). But as far as I can tell you can only do it if there's actually a sample loaded in the slot.

EDIT: For me though, the default assignments *do* appear to follow GM midi spec... Have you tried to reset to default from the preset menu? Also maybe check that you don't have an unwanted default layout set in the menu in the bottom left (last icon in the row of icons there). I don't know how midi learn interacts with any of this, I don't use it myself.

Yes, load a sample in the slot and you can change name and note in window to the right. You can of course change the image and colour by right clicking the pad for menu.

Thanks so much gentlemen that was it. I was trying to make an empty template so wasn't adding any samples.

Once a sample is loaded then manual rename and note assign is possible. :tu:

The default layout appears to follow the MPC mapping which I've never liked but then I'm left handed so maybe that has something to do with preferences.

I prefer Kick,Snare, Hat Closed, and Hat Open on the bottom row of pads. Much easier for me to finger drum that way especially when only using one hand. :)

The visual layout of the pads in the sampler is unrelated to their midi inputs. And if you don't like the layout of the pads themselves, I believe you can also just drag them around with the mouse, no need to change the midi notes for that...

I'm also new to Waveform and only discovered that yesterday... :D

I just want to be able to put together a drum pad layout that matches the same one that I use in every other drum plugin I own so things are consistent.

That's an easy task in Waveform but....there appears to be a bug. Saved pad payouts and drum kit presets are not recalled properly here.

The default kits do not contain all the note numbers I normally use (and some that I don't use) so dragging pads around is not the solution. I need to be able to define note number, pad name, and location on the grid. Again that's easy to do but layouts are not being recalled properly here on two different systems.

That's OK because the Micro Drum Sampler in Waveform is fairly primitive compared to the other drum plugins I own so I'll just use something else.

Still I should probably submit the bug report for review. It could be user error but save/load doesn't really leave a lot of room for user error.

I haven't had many issues with presets that I create myself but I have definitely had issues with the included presets. My advice if to avoid them like the plague. Don't even start with them.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Ok I figured out what's going on. The kits I created the other day were loading up with pad bank B active instead of bank A. I didn't notice that at first.

I never even touched bank B but there was a single sample in there and for some reason Kits saved with bank A active loaded with bank B active.

I also notice that it can be difficult to get a pad name to "stick". Often it will revert back to the original name.

I'm finding the Micro Drum Sampler to be let's say quirky or glitchy but I have other options so it's not a deal breaker.

I'm starting to really like Waveform as a whole. It doesn't have the MIDI data issues of FL Studio and has Step Record which Bitwig does not.

I'm only trying the free version and I don't know if I'm ready to get the Pro version yet but it wouldn't surprise me if Waveform became one of my most used DAWs. I may in time run into an issue that is a deal breaker but so far so good. I'm impressed at this point.
