I collaborate with myself. 8)

Post

I compose and record alone, then take my tunes out to friends for review and critique! Since it's just a highly advanced hobby for me and not a moneymaker, I don't feel very driven to drag others into my work (not to mention I can't find anyone that actually wants to play things like I want them to). Plus, it saves wear and tear on the nerves.. my ex-wife and I used to record together and we'd have some interesting and violent discussions over which way the music should go! :-o

I did the garage band thing back in high school, that was enough for me. Now, I don't show up late and drunk to the rehersal, sell my kit for drugs, or spend most of the set trying to hit up on hot babes! And erm should I do any of the above, it's not a big deal either (lol).

i have 2 people i "collaborate" with in 2 bands: edgar and tobi, both living in stuttgart.

tobi recently said "putte´s a dictator when it comes to music" .. :hihi: .. and he´s right. (he´s not upset by it, as he profits from it, like i do have my profit from making music with tobi).

its simply that i mostly exactly know what i want from the music i do, or the music i am involved in ..

though, its a FANTASTIC thingie to see new sides and turns simply cause there´s someone taking influence. but only if you REALLY allow it, cause you love what the other one offers.
thats my case, at least.

I'm bimusical...I work by myself when it's the Noise/Dark Ambient stuff, but I also drum in a spacy/arty Rawk band. Actually, we're recruiting at the moment...looking for a noisemaker/synthesist; somebody halfway between Delia Darbyshire and Alan Ravenstine would be perfect. Anybody in Vancouver wanna get noisome?

1) Look in the Vancouver phone book for "Delan Darbystine" or "Alia Ravenshire."

2) "Noisome" means stenchful, nothing to do with sound. :-D I hope you don't want that!

3) "Bimusical" -- I like.

un-noisome... unless provoked

[edit] 4) Alia Ravenshire... isn't she in one of the Harry Potter books? *ponder*

You've never rehearsed in a confined space with sweaty, beer drinking fellows, have you?

I'm a loner, a control freak, and an extremely self-conscious perfectionist (when it's something I care about). Those qualities don't go well with collaboration. Besides, I make music for myself, and how would someone else be better able to make the music that I have in my head?

Funny thing -- the only times I've played with others, they insisted on having an exhaust fan running. Go figure! refer to sig pic ;-)

But still, IIWY I'd prefer to get... hm... bruitish.

well put .. :)

I guess I should add that my all-time favorite musical experiences involve playing the violin in my (admittedly not great) high school orchesta.

I don't really consider that collaboration though. Live performance is a totally different experience than composition and/or production.

I'm a sad loner nowadays too. :(

Not that I'm against collaborating...did some good stuff a few years back with a mate and it was fun doing it, and got released etc, but then I f**ked off to NZ, which put paid to that. Probably my best stuff actually. Also did some stuff with another mate, and it was plain torture...couldn't agree on anything musically, even though we were good mates. Did some stuff with another mate, and we were just planets apart in terms of musical taste, even though the process itself was good.

Overall it's easier and more hassle-free working on my own. Plus....no other f**ker's going to get their grubby hands on my gear, which took years to collect :x :hihi:

I think overall the map for success with collaboration is that you all need to have the same appetites. Prodigious brandy/wine intake and a penchant for smoking your heads off without arguing. And being able to stand up for more than two hours helps. If one has less stamina than the other, it's a recipe for failure. :P

I've never met anyone in real-life or online who was serious enough to carry through on a collab, so I'm skeptical.

Plus the kind of stuff I make doesn't draw listens, let alone friends!!
