I was recently playing in a very casual band with some coworkers and friends, but it fizzled out as a couple of members moved away.

I honestly can't even imagine what that would be like. There is only one other person I have met in my lifetime that I can work with and I feel extremely fortunate to have found even that many. The people I work with are invariably into the most vacuous, appalling music imaginable and my friends are a) no better and b) not into making music at all.

We were mostly just a bunch of laid-back old dudes who just liked having an excuse to hang out and make noise. No egos, no lofty goals, just a good reason to play a bunch of songs, do an occasional local gig, and drink some beers. That’s also probably the main reason it didn’t last too long - you sorta need someone with an ego and goals to make sh*t happen, but we were all like, sure whatever.

It's just I don't know anyone who'd want to play the songs I'd want to play. Either I'd hate it or they would. The other thing, of course, is that everyone else in my department is less than half my age (literally).

You definitely need someone with a bit of drive, not necessarily ego, to make stuff happen. It's works best if it's just one of you with drive and everyone else is happy to follow along. If either of us had drive, I'm sure we'd be a lot more successful but I f**king hate that side of it, I just want to get up and perform. We need a booker but have no idea how to find one who'll work for free (because we won't make any money to pay them).
