Hello all,
TL;DR
Tyrell presets in the midi program folder are no longer in alphanumerical order and that's breaking up my live setup.
Is there a way to change that?

Full explanation:
I was heavily relying on Tyrell to be the main synth in my DAW DAWless setup

I have a bunch of controllers connected to Ableton and I have control over everything, I don't need to look at the computer.

I have buttons that change the presets, going up and down. I saved a lot of presets starting with #1 for Bass #2 for leads and #3 for poly synths and I saved all of them in the MIDI program folder. that each channel is in the range of the family of presets.
Channel 1 for bass channel 2 for leads, and you guessed it, channel 3 for Poly synths.

but suddenly Tyrell presets no longer show up in alphanumerical order, I get random presets.

is there a way to change it?
I stopped using this setup for a long time, looking for other synths that would replace Tyrell, but I couldn't find any.
please help, this means a lot to me.

You need to download and install the Mac version that says "Catalina ready" in the list of downloads on the Amazona page:

OMG!
It's the VST3 format, they changed it and rewrote it from scratch.
it doesn't have MIDI implemented in the same way.
I had the Catalina-ready version.
I even re-installed it to make sure it was the right one. and that made me read the readme files, and there it was, they rewrote the synth for vst3 and that's why it works differently.

Thanks for replaying, while it wasn't a direct answer, you made me look at things I haven't yet.

Thanks!

So if you have any MIDI issue with Tyrell N6 or the preset order (in the program change list)

Just use the VST 2 version!

The preset order doesn't have anything to do with the plugin format. Or, well, it's not the preset format itself that causes the problem.

The current "regular" Tyrell N6 3.0.3 version is at Revision number 3898 from 2016.

I think it was macOS 10.13 High Sierra in 2017 that introduced the new APFS file system, or at least made it mandatory. One "feature" of the new APFS file system is that it no longer sorts directory listings alphanumerically, which had been the case for ages before APFS. So any GUI controls using the built-in macOS "widgets" for file listings no longer automatically display correctly sorted lists, and sorting such listings has to be done manually.

As Tyrell N6 3.0.3 "non Catalina" is still on Revision 3898 from 2016, it does not yet contain a patch for the new AFPS un-sorted lists issue. It does however come with a VST3 plugin.

The "Catalina-ready" version of Tyrell N6 is Revision 3899, which is literally just Revision 3898 and its installers all re-compiled to include a few fixes that make it work in Catalina. One of those fixes was the sorting of file listing widgets, so the Revision 3899 "Catalina-ready" version of Tyrell N6 will correctly sort preset names. Just to confirm, I downloaded the 3899 "Catalina-ready" version from Amazona and installed it on my Ventura machine, and the preset names are all listed in correct order.

The one thing the 3899 "Catalina-ready" version of Tyrell did NOT have was a VST3 plugin.

So if you previously had the non-Catalina 3898 version installed, which included a VST3 plugin, and then you installed the "Catalina-ready" 3899 version over it, which doesn't include a VST3 plugin, then that means you now have a "mixed state" installation, as the 3899 installer didn't come with a 3899 VST3 to overwrite the old 3898 VST3. Your Tyrell N6 VST3 is still on Revision 3898 without the sorting fix, but any other format you chose to install (AU, VST2, AAX) will be on Revision 3899 and contain the sorting fix.

So please open your VST3 Tyrell N6 and confirm that it says 3898 in the bottom right corner. If you can switch to AU or VST2, then I would recommend to do that for the time being, since the 3899 versions should work better on modern macOS-es. If you wish or need to keep using the VST3 version, then unfortunately for now you will have to accept that file listings will be out of order.

I'm not fully in the loop, but I don't think there are any Tyrell N6 updates with a "Catalina-ready" VST3 plugin planned in the near future.
Cheers
Rob
