Maybe a Prophet 5, now that I'm looking back. Any value in a CS-80? I was never very impressed with the CS-80, personally, but if you all like it, I'd go along.

If you're interested in a near-perfect FREE Korg DW-8000 emulation, Full Bucket Music has the FB-7999 ready for download. I love that thing.

Thanks for the tip! I'm not sure if it's near-perfect. I'd like to have a tracktion version.

Post

Well, it lacks an arpeggiator for obvious reasons, but other than that, imports and exports in the DW's formats, and also emulates a DW-6000, which the original didn't do, either. But other than that, it's perfect!

Also, Tracktion's Digital retromod has a few DW-8000 patches, but they're ultimately just samples.

You got Digital 1? I only the demo. How many dw8000 patches are there? Are they marked, named?

Post

There are hundreds of sounds available in Digital 1, all cryptically named.

Some have clues as to their origin ("Bellish Vector" is certainly pulled off a Prophet VS, "81Z Voices" is a Yamaha TX81Z, etc.), but most have names like "Fret Bass" or "Repetitions," so it's not easy to say.

"DW Brass," "DW EP Pad," "DW Pad," and "DW Rhodes" are obviously from a 6000 or 8000.

"Korgish Pad," "Slow 8K Pad," too.

But some sounds, such as "Warm DWFM," are combinations or samples of layered synths, as indeed any of these are. You'll likely never know for certain what's a real DW-8000. Again, Full Bucket's DW-8000 emulation is the way to go to get the original sounds in a plugin, including all the original presets that came on that cassette tape, plus the sounds from the MEX-8000 and EX-8000 as well. And all fully editable.

https://www.fullbucket.de/music/fb7999.html will get you right to the description. The graphic there of the interface should give you a good indication of how careful Bjorn was in putting it together. Far better than Tracktion's RetroMod for DW-8000 accuracy and flavor.

Thanks for the cool info! I'll take both of them. Digital 1 maybe till black friday. I wonder why there was no intro sale, or I missed it. Thanks again

Post

There was an intro sale--I think Digital 1 has been out for at least two years.

Ooops!

Post

No harm--Tracktion offers dozens of sales throughout the year with some surprisingly deep discounts.

Personally, I think you'll appreciate FB-7999 more, if you're a fan of the DW-8000 and its family. If you prefer the sound of that era, and the actual hardware isn't as essential to you, then the Retromod is the way to go. Either way, the FB-7999 plugin is free and fantastic. And there are quite a few DW-series soundbanks on the web that you can grab and use with it.

A RetroMod VFX would let you have all that cross-modulation again, without the hassle of the dreaded Keyboard Calibration Error or overheating.
I know that's an old post and it doesn't look like your request was granted in the last five years but I second the desire for a VFX Retro Mod.

I used to own one but sold it on due in large part to the horrible key clack it had and the overall pain of using the hardware.
