My preference would be a full-blown plugin from someone...anyone...that could read the original patch data exactly. JRRshop has full samples of the original VFX patches for sale--some fairly inexpensively--that you can load into any sampler plugin. I enjoy that, but it's not the same as programming your own.

I didn't have any trouble with my VFX with key clack--which is curious that you did--but of course had continuous trouble with the dreaded "keyboard calibration error." Unfortunately, my VFX died a horrible death in a lightning strike in 2000.

Others have reported issues with Ensoniq keyboards and key clack including the VFX:

I believe it has something to do with the poly aftertouch as my ESQ-1 never had the issue. I bought my VFX used and it was not in pristine condition so no telling what abuse it went through over time.

I too would love an emulation of the VFX. Maybe from Arturia since they did an SQ-80 emulation.

I suspect if anyone does, it will be Arturia, which wouldn't be so bad as they'd likely make it switchable between a VFX and an SD-1.

I still have a VFX - but the keyboard flakiness is it's worst part. Polyphonic pressure was great for strings and brass... but the internal "staples" between left and right keyboard physically get corroded and periodically need wiggling; and if keyboard calibration fails, well it's just a heavy multitimbral sound module.

Love the fix that sometimes works... hold the keyboard over your knee and drop it slightly, so that it forces the internal keyboard to flex slightly. Or it's alternative - press heavily on left and right side keys at the same time... SOMETIMES works; more likely you take the allen screws to the expose the keyboard and wiggle directly...

I used to give it bang with my hand when it refused to recalibrate, right on the top of the back around middle C. Tended to work when my usual fix...flipping the power off and on a couple times...didn't work.
