It seems it's not working quite like other amp sims, and at times it sounds just awful when I try it. Any nice tutorials out there? Melda seems to have very limited information

I’m a big fan of Melda, but that plugin sounded generally terrible to me. The effects are fine, but the amps? No. Plus, to run it at high enough oversampling to get rid of aliasing, you end up with too much latency. My advice is to try something different. My favorite is Amplitube, but Helix is also awesome. (I got it free with an HX Stomp) Guitar Rig is great too, especially for experimental tones that make creative use of effects. I just demoed Bluecat Audio’s Axiom 2, and I thought it was good, but doesn’t really sound like classic amps. Sort of its own thing, also pretty flexible with effects like Guitar Rig. Maybe the best pitch shifter I’ve ever used.

I have several amp sim ecosystems, TH-U Overloud and STL Amphub is something I often use, and a number of other amp sims as well, so it's not like I need another one. I got the complete Melda bundle and MGuitarArchitect came with it, I'm just as happy with that purchase whether or not it works for me. It just confuses me that it seems so hard to dial in something useful

Yeah, I don’t know what to tell you, other than I hope they spend some quality time optimizing their code and getting a better understanding of what guitar players expect from an amp simulation. I think I read somewhere that they were going to, or did, implement a Neural Amp Modeler playback module in MGuitarArchitect. If so, that’s probably your best bet for getting a good tone from it. When I demoed it, there were a decent amount of good NAM captures posted on their site.

It'd be cool if they could implement something like LiveSpice which does circuit modeling so you could draw the circuit into the program and it will sound like the amp. It's not a plugin, but it would be a game changer for amp sims if Melda could include that in theirs

Chandler has posted several MGA tutorials to his YouTube channel. MGA's grid of modules makes it unlike other packages; its routing capabilities are much greater.

Tracking without oversampling and then engaging oversampling for mixing is a workable compromise in most situations.

There are many signal chain presets included. Those should provide starting places or inspiration for good tones.

What type of sound are you looking for. I did a few tone videos, but of course tone is subjective. Here is a video I made on an 80s style clean tone. Hopefully it gives you some ideas of how to set things up.

Thanks! It seems to work better with clean sounds, I'm afraid I'm a incureable metal head though and distorted sounds doesn't work so well

On bass, I'd recommend starting with the Kracked Glass preset for metal. It kind of gets into the dark glass tonal territory which alot of metal bassists are really into.

Everyone's taste is different, so I can't say if there is something off about the way you're setting it up or if you just don't like the sound. I would say that it is very easy to go around in circles in MGA if you aren't careful. I can try to give you a starting point and see if that helps.

I don't know what type of tones you like, so I can't really say, but if you're looking for non-classic metal tones, start with an impulse response or 2 that you like. Make sure your input level is set properly and load the Mithras amp or the Phobos amp. Adjust the tightness to your liking, adjust the tone controls and finally if there is too much low end or fizz at the top, use the filters in the IR loader to get rid of it. After that you can use the EQ to fine tune things.

Hopefully that helps a bit. Once you find a sound you like with the amps, then try switching up the cabinets. I find switching, amps, cabs and settings at the same time can create a rabbit hole that is impossible to get out of.

Thanks! I'll give it another try

A simple video playthrough of all amps (played through at default settings), and then I go back through the amps in reverse order, digging a bit deeper and tweaking some controls of each model...

Now that they've added the Neural Amp loader, how does it work? How do I load new amps into it and does the amps need cabs, or are they captures of combined amps and cabs? I've had a look at the Neural Amp site and find it confusing

Post

Just watch the new video I put out.

The models will all need cabs or IRs.

If you know, how long does the introductory price last, and can one get another demo period?
