Blue III (which I don't like at all).

Which is in my top 5 synths because I'm not an analog troglodyte. I prefer more complex synths capable of going far beyond the same old boring analog sounds. Blue 3 is capable of making some amazing sounds....to me. People use "digital" like it's an insult. To me it's a compliment that the synth is forward looking and not stuck in the past.

I just tried Blue3. On paper, it's everything I want in a basic, workhorse synth. And more! In practice, I literally hate everything about its GUI. It's an unusable, unseeable mess (blue, in general, is tricky for us humans to see) that doesn't fit on a 13" screen. With a better GUI layout and treatment of user samples, it would be an instabuy.

Blue 3 is extremely powerful, but I share the sentiment about workflow and GUI. This tends to be the thing with RP, great quality, but tends to throw feature after feature cramming it into a single screen philosophy and then breaking that philosophy with odd choices later on. Like the little 3D scope is a complete waste of time, for example.

I still have ALBINO 3 but stopped using it because the sound quality (not the sounds themselves) just couldn’t hang in the same cues next to my other synths like UVI, Omnisphere or pigments etc. The sound quality difference was too glaring. I might update but only if improving sound quality was a major part of the update.

It's true. I did a preset on it from another synth and Albino couldn't quite there, and frankly sounded mono next to the other synth.

Being 20 years old how could it sound like modern soft synths of the last few years ? It will be what it is, I think a lot of people who might have had earlier versions and lost it or the newly curious and those looking for that millennial sound period will appreciate it. I find it interesting.

In addition like every synth under the sun it likely has strengths. I have a real hard time remembering what it sounded like as I was not really writing much at the time. You also don't necessarily need every part of a synth to be A1 to make some very interesting sounds.

All depends on personal context I think.

That said, I don't hear anything in the sound demos which really inspires me (which, admittedly, has become more and more difficult over the years and the purchases I made anyway). It's fine. More toys to play with than I have time and inclination anyway.

It's cool that they bring back these old synths though. If Waldorf brings back Komplexer now I'm satisfied.

I love all the RP synths so I'll gladly pay the upgrade to E9. If you don't love them then pass on the upgrade....then we'll both be happy.

We partially agree because I love some of rob papen synths, very much for their sound.
Subboombass, BIT 2, punch 2 and RG are very very useful, predator 3 is a great synth.
But they still have a really bad UI in general and for some, too much bugs (like punch 2 for example, still crashing on me from time to time).

I love digital synths, phase plant is maybe my favourite synth, DS Thorn also, but somehow I never managed to love blue 3 sounds, they sound to "90s" for me.
But to be fair I never really went into creating my own sounds in it because I am really allergic to the workflow and if I want a complex sound my reflex is Falcon, not blue 3.

I also agree with you that it is very much a question of tastes.... Rob papen synths sound good ans they have often much more quality presets than the other synths.
If you do a blind test listening to presets, I am sure many of us will prefer predator 3 compare to diva, serum and maybe phase plant.

I'd love for Papen to turn Prisma into a copy of Analog Lab. Like an exact functional copy. Like don't even be ashamed that you copied it. Just do it. All presets across all his synths in one browser. They could even sell it standalone for people who just want presets. Those of us who own the synths could fully edit of course, just like in Analog Lab.

I remember trying it back in the day (I think my roommate owned it) and thinking it was pretty generic, even at the time when it was new. What was I missing out on? What were its strengths/what made it unique?

I remember one of the demo tracks to showcase Albino. It was created by Marko Lehmann (?) i believe. It was such a cool rythmic, melodious track. Started with a windy kind of padsound and then followed by a very deep bass sound. It was the kind of track that would suit perfectly in the car, cruising late at night, watching the city lights go by. Albino was a good synth.

Give me an Albino 3 any day of the week right now, not another sharp sterile super clean WT synth. I love those too at times. Adam Szabo's Viper was an amazing release new and old at the same time.

The thing is everyone does synths different, some make sounds, some use presets, some make music, some make bleeps and bloops and just make other sounds and just enjoy the process of being immersed in the interface and hearing what comes out so we cannot pin anything on any one synth satisfying all.

I do not want to typecast RP's synth as I have to much respect for him as a developer. They have a sound and yes some of the sounds are from times gone by, but far from all. It is up to the individual whether they find they use a synth or not just like any synth, there are some I have demos a couple of times, new ones and I just don't get them.

RP has a lot of synths and there is definitely at least one for everyone in that selection.

If the core sonic signatures somehow inspire you are only a few steps away from customizing them sounds yourself anyway. I have a lot of synths but you can tire a little and a new interface and different sound different approach can refresh things and get things doing again with your music. I still get surprises from RP synths and that counts for a lot as well. I look at Predator and it still gets used over and again.

Also I now know that some synths that I might have purchased with a little regret or was a bit hasty I end up using after looking into them more and working out what they do best. It's all part of the bigger picture of sound and music.

I think it is coming Mid to late November. I see it as be a bit like owning a classic car, but very much less expensive.




That's is how I feel with Vanguard as well, and now look at the price of that so I am glad I jumped on it.

I think something happens looking at a classic interface, that does not happen with a new synth.

Also whilst I have a fair attempt at making sounds myself sometimes you just don't want to, you want to make music and having a vast amount of presets can be fun to explore. Fact is sometimes for certain sounds you cannot better the presets that are there or made by someone who specializes in making sounds.
