Hi,

I'm having problems using Tracktion rewired to Reason (in OS X) and any help would be much appreciated. Basically when I have more than one track rewired to Reason I get playback gitches - for example say I have a track rewired to a Reason synth with 4 notes per bar sequenced in Tracktion. This plays fine until I add a second rewire filter on a different track, at which point the first note on the original track plays normally but subsequent notes just make a slight clicking sound. This happens even if the second track is rewired to a different Reason instrument on different channels. Muting one track also causes the other track to get quieter, which suggests to me that the outputs are getting mixed together somehow, which may be what is causing the problems.

I've been through the Reason/Tracktion rewire tutorial, and I think I'm setting up the input and output channels correctly - in fact I've tried various configurations but I just can't get it working properly. Is there something I am missing or is this a bug/limitation in Tracktion? I'd like to do the bulk of my sequencing in one program (Tracktion) but that won't be possible if I can only have one rewired track!

hello... I'm new to the world of computer recording and even newer to MIDI.

My worry is setting up drum tracks... I'm looking into the Natural Studios free samples, but I don't think the Tracktion sampler is capable of mapping them with all the factors and sensitivities required for involved/realistic drum tracks.

Will I need to get a soundfont player and d/l the soundfont samples instead of the wavs, or is tracktion capable of making drumtracks without using external VST's???

I'm a TOTAL newbie when it comes to this stuff... Speak to me like I'm an idiot please! :)

For realistic drums, you will need a serious drum "rompler", Search KvR for "realistic drum library" and you'll find lots of discussions. The Forum search button is on the menu bar at the left of your screen.

I have Sonic Reality Sonik Capsule Studio Drums which includes/uses Sampletank 2 LE. It was $80. That was the best price/realism I could find, based on demos, reviews, and comments. The sound quality and realism of the kits are excellent, but I'm not very happy with ST2LE because it is incredibly slow at loading sounds. Auditioning different kits will test your patience. Their unique key mapping "I-map" is great for playing drums from a keyboard, but takes some practice.

If you want a no-cost option, use sfz from rgc:audio and the nskit sound lib.

If you don't want to program beats, just use loops such as SmartLoops Dry Studio Kit.

thanks bithead... I'm gonna go with "no-cost" options now until I learn more and see if it's worth my while!

I just assumed the Tracktion sampler could handle velocities and a mapped kit... it's definately more basic then I thought (which is alright though)... I just hoped I could avoid an extra plugin to conserve precious CPU power :)

D_M_C-- easily fixed.

-You already have the Natural Studios kit. Get rgc:audio's sfz (there's also sfz+ if you're going to use soundfont, but it's a commercial VST). If you already have the soundfont, great, if not, get the soundfont version AND the raw .wav files (see below)
-Install and drag an instance of sfz to your track.
-Load the Natural Studios soundfont kit into it. If you get a message that your machine doesn't have enough memory, change the 'mode' to DFD (Direct From Disc).

Done.

You can also use 'sfz format' instead of soundfont, but it doesn't stream from disc yet:

If you're interested in a full-featured free sampler, sfz is the only one. Its format uses a text file, but the rewards are plenty. Check out Peter Jones' sfz page, found HERE for ready-made sfz mappings for Natural Studios Free, along with a bunch of other stuff.

Hello, I'm curious about when editing notes in a midi clip. When I try to move them around it moves an entire bar, I want to be able to move more precisely, by 64ths. How can I do this?

One of the best things about Tracktion is that the "snap" is controlled by the zoom. So you basically never have to adjust snap. Just zoom in to desired resolution (using the mousewheel is the fastest way). You can also turn snap on/off by hitting "Q". That will allow you to move things around freely from any zoom level.

Wow...how...logical. Thanks much. Snap. So that's what its called......

Yeah, I came from cubase where I had to adjust snap pretty much any time I wanted to edit something. Since I got tracktion I've never worryed about snap cuz I usually zoom in anytime I want to do fine edits. Its great!!! Especially with the mousewheel.

Well, thanks for the total absence of help. On the off chance that anyone gives a shit I figured out that:

1 I made a minor mistake rewiring to Reason, but getting it right solves little because:
2 There are serious midi note-not-sounding issues when two notes are right next to each other. This only happens when the midi is sequenced out in Tracktion, not in Reason.

By the way, extensive searching of this forum turns up various other midi note dropping issues but none like the one I am experiencing (bar one possible brief mention) and no solutions. It's not like I did no research before asking my question.

I will be keeping an eye on Tracktion 2 but it looks like I will be buying Ableton Live. At least it works, even if it is CPU hungry.

Hey Cardinal,

I don't know anything about Reason or ReWire, so I'm no help. Also, you'll get a better response by posting a separate thread instead of in the newbie questions thread. Don't ask me why, but even though I like to be helpful, even *I* skip this thread sometimes. I bet others are the same. ;)

Take care,
Greg

I have no dropped note problems. And Tracktion 1 has been working non stop for over a year over here.
Have fun with Live and its CPU hogging, clunky interface.

I figured this thread wasn't getting read much, but in some parts people get quite annoyed with newbies starting potentially stupid threads when there is already a place for newbie questions! I'll hold off buying Live until I've demo'd Tracktion 2 because I do really like it. It would suit me perfectly if I could get over this frustrating problem. Unfortunately I don't think that will happen with the current version. I've recently done a full reinstall of both OS X and Tracktion, and tried every tweak I can think of, and still no joy. Anyway, thanks for the responses guys - I do appreciate it.

No worries, mate. I can understand not wanting to violate "newbie protocol", but in this case it's a perfectly reasonable problem to bring to a separate thread. ;)
