One thing to remember, particularly for surf: most spring reverb plugins are stereo (because we get weirded out by mono) but most spring reverb recordings you've heard are mono. At least on guitar amps. So collapse down that stereo image if you want true "mic'd up amp" authenticity.
Also, we haven't even talked about drip yet. Benson drips. I don't like a spring that doesn't (hardware or software). And "drip" is crucial for surf guitar.

Fuse Audio VREV-305 and PSP Nexcellence are my two favorites.
Past To Future has some great sounding spring IR packs. Last one I got has sets from a TAPCO 4400 and ARP 2600. They sound fantastic.

The video is a little annoying because he never shows off the “HIT ME!” feature. Though there is some nice feedback demonstrated.
Of all the spring reverbs I’ve tested, TimeVerb-X is one of the less disappointing ones. u-he sounds like an OK plugin reverb to me, but it’s not convincing as a real spring at all. The attack is all wrong, to start with.
If you haven’t tried Physical Audio Dual Spring, you’re missing out on the only one that can really stand up in a direct comparison to a real spring tank. I found TimeVerb-X was second best, but you can still tell it apart from a real spring in direct comparison. Though in a mix, probably not.

If a really good deal came along, I would...spring for it...

I always love this threads of completely contradictory advice ("best by far" vs "sounds nothing like a spring")
Like most things, sometimes I prefer one over the other on a case-by-case basis. I often use the OP's Eventide, but I have and occasionally use PSPs and UAD's too. Hell I like the one built-in to Guitar Rig. Usually I want a spring to sound trashy.
Good advice above by Funkybot about putting it in mono for a true vintage sound. As ever how you use a plugin is usually more important than which one you have.

The UAD one is pure excellent. Very real sounding.

I find springs to be a bit of a one trick pony though... But when it works...

Recoil by Boz is very flexible (no pun intended) https://www.bozdigitallabs.com/product/recoil/ and not expensive.

The BX20 can straddle the spring line into an almost plate territory. It’s a bit dark._leras wrote: Tue Oct 17, 2023 9:09 am The UAD one is pure excellent. Very real sounding.

Not a favorite sound going in, but a good demonstration of what it does.

Spring reverb is not typically my first reach when looking for reverb, but when I heard AudioThing's Springs I was thoroughly impressed.

I see - I guess you mean the same dynamic behaviour I also mentioned here earlier (a behaviour the plugins often lack) - and that's what I think is even more pronounced if it sits in the same casing as the speaker (as is the case with those classic Fender combos that are typically used for surf music)...kevinsparks wrote: Tue Oct 17, 2023 12:26 am I was referring to the overtones the Danelectro begins to generate if you keep picking relentlessly.

It unfortunately never wanted to work reliably, but for a long time, Hotto Engineering's donationware Spring Reverb had a certain "something" that I preferred... xoxos' Spring2 was another I liked, but would "explode" a little too easily. Other than using particular spring IRs I like, Springbox. It may not sound amazing by itself, but does seem to sit in mixes nicely. From what I've heard, both Spirit Reverb and Twangstrom wouldn't lead to buyer's remorse, they sound great (I just don't have them).
Music can no longer soothe the worried thoughts of monarchs; it can only tell you when it's time to buy margarine or copulate. -xoxos
