How to get a step clip to display all of the instruments in a drum plugin?

I'm fairly new to midi stuff. When I insert a step clip, it has only 8 rows. The drum plugin I'm using (MT-PowerDrumKi) has 13 instruments. How do I get the step clip to have 13 rows that correspond to the plugin's 13 instruments? Many thanks!

Use the Waveform -> Utility plugin Midi Note Names, there is a preset for MT drums you can load. Put this before MT drums in the plugin area. When you then create the step clip it will have rows foe the extra drums/articulations.

Why is it necessary to do this, when it's not necessary with other drum plugins? And why is it necessary to open the MTPDK2 plugin control window before the plugin will make any sound, after reloading a project that uses it?

(That too, is not ncessary with other similar plugins like Modo Drums and Steven Slate Drums, etc.

Different drum plugins have different midi mappings for note->drum. Are you expecting a step clip to know the mapping? I think by default a step clip will map general midi. MTDrums does not use General Midi so the note names will be wrong in the step clip for example handclap aint a handclap. If you can't be arsed to pop in a note name plug and set to MT drums then I can't help you. I just checked with MTDrums and the edit played the drum hits without opening the MTD interface. Its not an issue with Waveform maybe take it up with the creator of MTD? I don't really use MTD as there are better options. I can recommend the new and free BFD Player which sounds much better.

Plugins reporting note names to the DAW is a special extra step that I believe was developed by PreSonus. I'm pretty impressed that Tracktion also implemented it. However, few plugin makers include this functionality. It's really nice that Waveform has a plugin that allows you to step up where the plugin maker has not.

I have never used that plugin, so I have no idea. I have noticed that some time after version 9, Waveform sometimes has troubles re-loading plugins properly. Image-Line plugins are particularly bad for this. It may be related to this, or it may be something else.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

It's an "optional freeware" thing - sort of like a nag screen. If you registered it, it can be unlocked. Or, just open the VST once per session...

Peter is right: I forgot about that feature. It's the plugin maker who put that nag screen in.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

Indeed, I had forgotten about that also. I don't have the issue because I registered MT Power Drums years back. Can't rember how much I paid then but I see there it's now donation ware and can be registered for as little as £7.

Got to admit I'm a bit of a noob re midi stuff. Thank you for the BFD Player suggestion. I gave it a spin and was impressed, but had a slight problem with it: whenever I played a midi drum track made with BFD, I'd get sound continuity problems when recording a simultaneous audio track. At first, I thought I had a dodgy audio cable connection, because that's exactly what it sounded like, but then discovered that the problem disappeared if I switched off the BFD plugin. This might disappear when rendering the drum track to wav, but I'm not ready to do that, at this stage. Hopefully, I'll find a cure.
