This seems very basic : is there a category proper for MIDI files (.mid) in the V5 browser ? Not a Bitwig clip, probably not a Note clip ?
So I created a MIDI folder in ~/Bitwig Studio/Library/
Then in the right panel browser I choose Everything -> Location -> My Library and 'reveal file'. It shows in the pop up OS file browser the existing directories such as Wavetables, Presets, Templates an Clips and it shows the new MIDI directory . I then choose in the browser to re-index the location of My Library hoping that it will recognize the new folder. It doesn't. What to do ?

My Midi folder is in my samples folder, which is added as "Sound content location" in Bitwigs preferences. For quick access, i dragged that Folder to the quick selector.
When i press the "insert from library" i can also determine that this Folder is opened by default. (in your case the midi folder). So if you try this route (making a sound content location folder for your midi files), and Bitwig still does not scan it properly, then it might be some Bitwig problem. Or in rare cases OS read/write-permission error.
This is how the folder looks opened for me (with popup browser), and the midi files are not a category, but "file type". So if you reach this point, you'll then be able to save that view as default for insertion from instrument tracks, and done
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
I built a Looper for Bitwig!

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. It turned out that indeed, after a restart of Bitwig it was OK.
What's confusing with this is the alleged nature of the browser and how it updates itself. And if it doesn't do it automatically there's a re-index function. So in any case it should 'happen'. Without having to do something so 1997 as rebooting the software.

Indeed, if there is a re-index option we shouldn't have to restart it ...I restart it right away because I didn't know there were a re-index option...mevla wrote: Wed Oct 25, 2023 12:23 am What's confusing with this is the alleged nature of the browser and how it updates itself. That being said, I think rebooting is like slapping something that doesn't works... it will always be relevant no matter what year you are in
