They changed the internals for the mk2 to make it more palatable for most people. Apparently it is beefier, with more sub bass range and a more refined (some describe it as "scooped") sound.

The difference in sound is minimal. I've had both and I consider them essentially the same.

Then main difference for me is the ergonomics. I like the MK II's distinctly better for workflow.

Eh? I just watched the cockos youtube video where he compares the two and the changes to the saturation is HUGE. It literally sounds nothing like the mk1.

The 2nd filter definitely also has very different sound to it.

I checked because I set my mk1 up exactly like the settings he was comparing and indeed I could not duplicate the mk2 sound when using the 2nd filter + distortion.

So yeah, while everything else sounds pretty much the same, the overdrive and the filter are nothing alike.

Personally I think the biggest benefit is indeed the workflow. That performance knob and the extra buttons may very well take me over the edge and try to find a mk2 at some point. However, right now I'm content in just using this as a synth in a box. Haven't even started working with the sequencer yet.

I should have been more specific, in the bass range. I tried to match it in the low frequencies but it's way off, mainly the HPF but I hear clear differences in the LPF too when compared to the video. Anyhow, I only went by the video as I don't have a mk2..

If you got both, then you definitely have more accurate info than I have so I'll trust judgement on that.

Yes, that's what changed. Analog Keys was made to be heftier sounding, MK2 got the same changes.

when I got my a4 I read that the mk1 version even sounded better than the mk2. I don't know whether it's true or not but the mk1 really sounds amazing, and love its old style button configuration. Truth is, the mk2 has more ins/outs

AS for the octatrack, I got the mk2 black because a) wanted more ins, b) wanted the new buttons (which if they don't get stuck they are really comfy), c) the visual is nicer than the mk1 (e.g. the record button lits it all, and not just a led next to it), d) the black is dope

Added an Euclidean mode for the sequencer.

You can now save a Sound from a specific trig on the sequencer, complete with its sound- and parameter locks applied.

The NOTE parameter on the TRIG page now shows the note value and the number of semitones in the screen UI.

Improved the naming of the DUAL VCO, IMPULSE, and NOISE GEN machines by adding machine type group naming. The new names are SY DUAL VCO, UT IMPULSE, and UT NOISE.

The sample STA and END parameters are now high resolution. It is also now possible to snap to integers for the STA and END parameters. This, together with now showing true integrers in the display, makes it easier to find the exact start and end points in samples, especially in longer samples such as sample chains.

Added the functionality that when selecting an empty sample slot and then pressing [YES], now opens the +DRIVE sample list.

Improved the screen UI and navigation for the machine selection list and the Sound Manager.

Several analog machines are now scaled in semitones and with high resolution.

It is now possible to also click DATA ENTRY KNOB D to assign a sample from the sample list that is opened when accessing the SMP parameter on the SAMPLE page.

[MKII] Implemented a new LED boot sequence.

Implemented minor improvements of the LED color scheme to better harmonize between different devices of the product line.

Bug fixes

The USB Class Compliant audio from the computer to the Elektron device could sometimes be silenced.

Modulating multiple parameters over MIDI CC or Overbridge could sometimes cause the UI to stop responding.

SysEx dumps could become corrupted when sent to certain computer software.

Just had a quick play before hitting the hay and in particular really liked the new acoustic kick, has poke. Had to remember to update Overbridge too, there’s a new v2.7 which includes controls for the new machines.

Is the workflow improvement of the MK2’s physical buttons and extra ports really worth paying double the price of a second-hand MK1, now that the latest firmware updates bring the exact same Euclidean sequencer and engine features to both generations?

I like all the MK1 versions more due to their physical size being smaller and I just like the retro look and button feel of these older ones.. doesn't hurt that they are way cheaper too.
