There are any number of ancient VSTs that can still offer up very usable sounds but it's more about how you interact with them and how easily they make it or drive you to experiment without being unwieldy.
Msoundfactory, Phase Plant, Falcon, Avenger etc. are insanely powerful in terms of capabilities. They're all as deep as oceans but I'd fire up Current 9 times out of 10 BECAUSE of its relative restrictiveness not in spite of it.
That's not a diss on those synths etc. They are incredible feats of engineering and design but it often feels like overkill in most applications I'd use a synth for.
As I said above there's a lot to be said for the concept of an instrument. Something that has defined limitations and capabilities because that gives you very clear boundaries to work within and helps creative focus. It also breeds familiarity and familiarity encourages speed.
