I just got a nice email:

MACKIE IS GIVING AWAY A FREE FULL VERSION OF TRACKTION TO ALL TAPE OP
SUBSCRIBERS!

FREE Tracktion Music Production Offer from Tape Op and Mackie!

Tracktion is very cool DAW software that will run on PC or Mac utilizing
most audio software/hardware interface protocols such as ASIO.

Tracktion was designed by UK programmer Julian Storer who wasn't that happy
with the existing DAW programs, so he wrote his own. The key difference with
Tracktion compared to lots of other software is that it uses a single window
graphic interface. Mackie was impressed enough with the software to sign on
as the international distributor of Tracktion.

This is real, full featured recording software with drag-and-drop editing, a
built-in sampler, VST plug-in and virtual instrument support, track
freezing, etc. and more... Tracktion now includes Mackie's Final Mix
Mastering Tool Kit, so you can assemble and burn CDs.

Best of all, thanks to Mackie and Tape Op, it's free!!!

Don't wait, click the following URL to get your copy:

not that it matters much, because free is free, but this is the same NFR copy that has been offered by Mackie since the first of the month.
And while the software itself is identical to what you would get if you paid the 80 bucks, the upgrade offer will not be the same. there has been a bit of confusion on that point in the past...
So, while the people that purchased T1 for $80 will recieve a discount of AT LEAST $80, those that have the NFR copy will have to pay the full price for T2.
I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade here, but I'm sure that most folks would like to know this up front, rather than be disappointed when they fall in love with T1 and find out they have to pay more than they expected to have T2...
with all that said and done, I still believe that Tracktion is a fantastic piece of work and if T2 is 1/10 as innovative as T1 is, it won't matter how you get there, it will still be a great value for the money.

I bought my T1 long ago, back when Jules released an update every couple of days! Ahh, those were the days.. glad they're not here any more, it was insane keeping up with it! :-o

The NFR trick is a decent one, as long as folks know (like you said) that they don't get a T2 discount. But I expect T2 to be priced under Cubase and SONAR anyway, so it should still be a big mover. The idea is to get the product out in front of more folks, and I think a lot of TapeOp subscribers don't spend a significant portion of their lives online..

We'll see! I have the T2 Mackie page bookmarked. :hihi:

sorry, but there is no way in hell this app will ever be in regular use in my studio,...it simply is just about the worst DAW software i have ever used.
it in no way will ever be able to compare to nuendo2,which is what we use here. hate to be the only going against the grain here, but tracktion is a big joke,..i'm glad it was free, because i wouldnt pay $10 for it,much less $80,you really do get what you pay for when it comes to DAW (in most cases). this is the clumsiest user interface i have ever seen. just plain DUMB. if you like it tho',more power to ya,i like an app that works. this thing is just hokey.

youre a very minority voice, sounds like me before I actually tried out the program in serious use for a week or so

Any clue how much T2 will cost? Im liking what I have seen since I downloaded the free version. Im on a serious budget.. I dont know if id buy T2 if its going to cost some serious coin. $80 I would go for...

Post

AFAIK we have no official word on that yet..

However we DO know that T1 owners get at least their $80 off the price of T2..

..that sort of implies that T2 will cost more than $80.

Okay, I don't want to steal a thread or anything but it has been a long day, and this has been bugging me for a while.

What is it with this whole "If you make serious music then you should have serious equipment and if you don't you can't really be serious" attitude?

The thing that I have really been impressed with here at KVR is the way software developers, audio professionals and techno nerds of every sort are REALLY polite, respectful, and HELPFUL to those of us who are new to your world. Whenever I want to know something, I post a question and I get at least five answers with properly embedded links to sites that actually give longer answers than I want. It is almost bizarre how useful this site is. It reminds me of Douglas Adams' Babel Fish.

But recent history is full of really neat ideas that have slowly succumbed to the iron rule that says that 'Nothing really cool, beautiful or interesting shall be allowed to exist unmolested and uncorrupted for any extended period of time'.

What usually happens is that the initial period of frenzied, anarchistic creativity is followed by the involvement of big money, with all of the cost/benefit analyses that this implies. And the thirty year old maverick becomes the thirty-five year old executive, and before you know it he becomes a prominent backer of legislation that is designed to make sure that no one else ever gets to do exactly the sorts of things that THEY did on their climb to the top.

And the first step in this process is this silly insistence that only expensive tools make good products. Silly, Silly, SILLY! I mean, grow up.

I love this virtual place. I really do. I am new to this technology. But I have been studying music history for longer than I would care to admit. And I think that I can state authoritatively that this is a wonderful and unique time in history. These are, without question, the best of times to be a creative musician or a composer. And KVR is a really big part of why this is so. I do so wish that people who post to show how cool they are would find a less enlightened forum to do it in.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.
